Question:
What is the difference between a Life cleric and a necromancer?
Research:
Life clerics and necromancers are both portrayed raising the dead.
Hypothesis:
Life clerics and necromancers are very different, and could be even viewed as opposites by some people.
Experiment:
I will page through vague passages of D&D 5e rulebooks and look at a bunch of online memes to gather information.
Data and Analysis:
Life clerics are wielders of life giving magic, have great fashion sense, and bring people back from the dead. "You'll be back on your feet in no time!"
Necromancers are wielders of life giving magic, have great fashion sense, and bring people back from the dead. "You'll be back on your feet in no time!"
Conclusion:
Life clerics and necromancers are one and the same.

Edited by shell: 10/23/2020 11:19:18 PMNecromancers do not wield life giving magic. Well, they might, but it's not how they raise the dead. They use necromantic energy and dark spirits to bind corpses to their will. A creature in a necromancers service is undead. Clerics generally resurrect the dead by plucking their souls from afterlife and binding them back to their body. The fallen are not in their service and are not undead. Necromancers can learn how to resseruct by force, but generally it requires divine favor.

Clerics resurrect the dead, truly returning them to life. Necromancers reanimate the dead. That is giving the remains of the dead the ability to move around, but enslaved to the will of the necromancer. One is a gift. The other is a curse.

That’s not really the scientific method; that’s just research. Your hypothesis, I believe, should be a question, such as “What are the differences & similarities between a cleric’s & necromancer’s magic?”. Your experiment should be.. Well, an actual experiment. Trying out both a cleric’s spells & a necromancer’s in various situations for instance, and seeing what happens. What you listed as your experiment should actually be under the research bit.

Cleric is a class of spell caster, Necromancy is a school of magic. Clerics can be Necromancers, but they can be other things aswell. Bards, Wizards, and Sorcerers can also be Necromancers, and they are not Clerics. I don't think Warlocks have a way of acquiring Animate Dead without multi classing though.
