Sixth Lesson

Ikeriabelle is summoned to the same location she had met Luck most recently. Keria floats up the cliff face. A shard of metal is launched at her face, shortly before Luck says, "Keria! Welcome." She catches it. "Hello again Luck! How are you on this fine Valley day?" "Good, good. Caught a wyvern on the way here." "Ooh! Can I see it?" "Probably somewhere about..." his eyes scan the mountain range. "There. I wrote 'Luck rulz' on it's forehead and let it go." "Heh. That was smart." She chuckles. "Anyways," he says. "You've gotten pretty good with your material control. Time to move on to applying it to yourself." "Like a Bladesheath?" "Or any armsheath, really. Though crystalsheaths will be the most difficult among them--once you've applied material to yourself, it can become difficult to alter." "Hm. I've been studying those manuscripts you sent me, on Armsheathes. They were extremely interesting, albeit slightly skimp on details." "Well, they weren't exactly instruction manuals." He chuckles. "Now, take a seat." Luck waves his hand across the clearing, gesturing to the total lack of seating. Abyssilialite flows into a non-descript seat. Keria sits. Luck sits back, a pillar of silver rising to meet him. "Our first step is creating the lowest layer of your armsheath--about a centimeter off the skin, no more. Try coating your arm in metal." "Hm. Ok." Abyssilialite rises, and forms about half a centimeter. "Dangit. Come on me." More of the dark metal rises, and finishes it, coating her arm. “You have successfully cast your arm in metal. Now, you’ve gotta be able to move it.” She twists her arm, and in a bit, she is able to move it fluidly. “Good job. Second, we will make the outer shell. Same width—about a centimeter—but distanced from you arm.” He forms a mold of a bladesheath. “About so.” More Abyssilialite flows up her arm, and forms the outer layer. "How's that?" “Good. Now, you need to connect them, and it’s not as simple as it sounds. The material needs to be perfectly consistent throughout. You may need to repeatedly go back and restructure portions.” "Consistent? Like pure metal, and all along the grain or something?" “There’s a lot of factors to the material—subtle alterations in purity or density, for example. Any two samples of metal from your armsheath need to be identical.” "Hm. What about Challenger's and that chunk you gave me earlier?" “The quality of metal in those should make the process easier, though factors such as air pockets and stress still come in to play.” "Hm. Let's try." The pocket slowly fills with metal. “I suggest stopping at interval to check your already-produced material for inconsistencies, and fix them if need be.” "Ok." Keria pauses, and glances at the middle of the bladesheath. “Slowly, carefully. I have all the time in the world.” She checks the middle, finding no inconsistencies, she continues. After a bit, she finishes, finding a few inconsistencies, but not numerous. "How does this look?" She holds up the completed bladesheath. "Good. Next you need to move your arm in the full thing. Should be significantly more difficult than moving your arm was previously." Keria twists her arm a bit, and it gets stuck. "Well." "Good, but you'll need a full range of motion before you even begin to move on. Remember, we haven't even started on shifting the armsheath while you're wearing it." "Good, but you'll need a full range of motion before you even begin to move on. Remember, we haven't even started on shifting the armsheath while you're wearing it." “Now, you need to figure out how to change the sheath’s shape between blade and spike without effecting the consistency of material. That’s the part that’ll take practice, practice practice.” "Consistency you say. Like state of matter?" “Frequency of matter, yes. And consistency of material—again, no air pockets. "Oh. So you mean it has to be solid." He chuckles. “Yes, I would like your weapons to be solid.” "That's easy heh heh. I just didn't understand what you meant." “Yeah, well, you’re not gonna have fifteen minutes to reshape your weapon mid-combat. I suggest you get to practicing.”
