Hello everyone, KS27 is here to ruin your day!
Hooray! Today is the 2nd anniversary of the release of Destiny 2: Forsaken!
Forsaken was released on the 4th of September, 2018. And today is the same date in 2020. Yay! Party!
It’s also the anniversary of the day Cayde-6 died.
Yeah, that killed the mood, didn’t it? Don’t worry, I’m not finished. This post will discuss a very popular topic amongst fans and also educate on some hilarious, interesting and obscure Hunter Vanguard lore.
So, ever since the tragic and dramatic death of our goofball pal, Cayde, many people have been constantly asking this one question:
Who will be the next Hunter Vanguard?
This question has caused a dilemma amongst the fans and in the lore with Hunters scattering, questions of the City’s stability, suggestions of making Taniks the next Vanguard, even people desperately grasping for ideas of ways to revive Cayde.
(Next great idea: Scorn Cayde-7. Definitely possible. Not ironic at all)
And I’m here to deliver to you this uplifting message:
Now you’re allowed to panic.
Let me introduce you to one of the most mysterious failures in lore:
Kauko Swiftriver!
Love this guy. Honestly, what a legend. What? You’ve never heard of Kauko Swiftriver? I shall educate you!
Kauko was the 3rd-to-last Hunter Vanguard. Cayde was the last, Andal Brask was before Cayde, and Kauko was before Andal. And what else do we know about Kauko?
He disappeared.
That’s it. Poof. Nothing else. This guy was the HV (Hunter Vanguard) and he vanished. You wanna know the best part? He didn’t leave a Dare behind. Brilliant. So what did the City and Hunters do?
They waited 2 years!
After Kauko had been missing for 2 years, finally the City hit the Panic Button™! Kauko was declared dead. His Dare wasn’t found so the Speaker said “Whatever, you Hunters deal with your issues and select your next leader. Peace out.”
And the Hunters scattered like disgusting little roaches (oh, I know my Hunter-main readers are loving this).
And so began the thrilling trilogy of the worst Vanguard Dare failures ever. Of all time.
First was Kauko’s lost Dare.
Next in line, awhile after Kauko was declared dead, Cayde and Andal made a Dare to fill the position Kauko had left vacant (and they were definitely drunk when they made this Dare, by the way). A race to kill the mercenary Taniks, the Scarred. Whichever one killed Taniks won and the loser had to become the HV. Cayde killed Taniks so Andal became the HV. Then comes the funny part: Taniks was still alive. Andal stayed in the Vanguard while Cayde went and killed Taniks again. Then guess what happened? Taniks lived! Taniks is more unkillable than a Guardian!
Next Taniks killed Andal. Another terrible loss for the Hunter Vanguards (also extremely ironic. The Senate would be proud). And since Cayde had never killed Taniks he replaced Andal.
And most of us know how Cayde died at the hands of the Scorned Barons and that he left behind a failure of a Dare, relying on the absurd idea of a Hunter killing him. Which didn’t happen. So now we are once again left without an HV (shush, this post isn’t about Uldren). Kauko, Andal, and Cayde’s Dares all failed. And now 2 years have passed since Cayde’s death so we can slap the Panic Button™ and freak out just like everyone did with Kauko. All y’all who’ve been squawking about getting a new HV or reviving Cayde for 2 years nonstop are now justified.
And yes, I did shut my mouth and wait 2 whole years just to make this post on this day. Am I obsessed? Maybe.
Did I look into the future with my ability of precognition to know that there still wouldn’t be a replacement for Cayde two years later? Maybe.
Remember Kauko!
Also -on a slightly related note- a reminder that October 1st is the anniversary of Shadowkeep’s launch, and the return of our favorite homeless mercenary and enemy to Hunter Vanguards: Taniks the Scarred (as a Nightmare). Perhaps we can celebrate with a completely “serious” post about why Taniks is absolutely 100% the rightful Hunter Vanguard? I’m joking, of course. Unless…

So roughly 2 years of uldren being slain also, he must be hella lost since he been rezd and we not seen him since that video
-
This post was more entertaining than the last 2 years of this game
-
Peep the "worst ever.....of all time" Easter egg you threw in there. I do love some RvB
-
I mean I knew uldren couldn't be the hunter vanguard for some key reasons... 1. The hunters dare is taken between 2 Hunters. Guardains. Uldren wasn't a guardian, and all he did was inherit ace of spades and the debt. 2. This is very important. Uldren is DEAD The risen we see isn't him, uldren the person no longer exists and therefore can't be apart of that. 3. We killed uldren. Ace of spades is ours now. And his dept... So to conclude. Uldren wasn't a guardian, therfore isnt going to be the hunter vanguard unless bungie -blam!-s up the lore. So to the people who so desperately want him to be... He won't be. The vanguard dare doesn't work that way.

In all likelihood, the most probable choices for Hunter Vanguard right now are Shiro-4 and Ana Bray. Ana Bray because, well, lore wise she is going to be the one of the few experienced Hunters in the City who could feasibly take up the position. Shiro-4 because he is considered one of the best Hunters the Vanguard has ever had, so much so that lore wise he is the rightful heir to the Lucky Raspberry, which is really saying something.

This post is a bright light in a very dark cave. Was a great read. Will support more posts like this.

You sir are brilliant. Was reading on ishtar and all your statements are acurate. Thanks for the read.
-
I’m going to spoil everything My hunter is caydes replacement There you go now you know
im just kidding but I wouldn’t complain if it happened
-
I’d give it another two years before Bungie decides to advance the plot.
-
Vanguard leadership goes to next of kin or love interest so hunter vanguard leader would be the chick with the ships and sparrows
-
I'd like to know what happened to the statue they said they were gonna put in the tower for his "memory"?
-
I’m terrified the next Vanguard rep is going to be Hawthorne.
Sorry, all out of salt.
-
It happens every once in awhile, but your post is why I still come to these forums!

Edited by silvermoon383: 9/5/2020 4:19:48 PMHey! We Hunters didn’t scatter like roaches! We just went out to pick up Titans’s slack with the patrols (we all know they’re just hiding behind the Wall, it’s all Zavala does!). Ok yeah, I may have gotten an email about a vote before I left, but i was already on my ship prepping for takeoff, honest! *Ghost interjection: “They really weren’t. I haven’t seen anyone pack so fast after that email arrived.”
-
As a hunter main myself I can tell you with absolute certainty none of us would ever take on something as horrifying as- *glances at word scribbled on the palm of my hand* “Responsibility” *shudders in fear* For real I got a good kick outta this, legit didn’t know about Koukas existence, and it seems from the lore you mentioned no one in-universe cared about it anyway 😆
-
It’s been 2 years I think they forgot about the question of who it should next be
-
The HV is gonna be Uldren Sov.
-
And yes, I did shut my mouth and wait 2 whole years just to make this post on this day.
Bahaha, too good.
-
This was a good read. Thank you.

You chirp the Hunters but what have Titans and Warlocks done? Zavala uses his ult every once in a while to save people and Ikora opens a gate (though she did jump on a ship and break so she's pretty boss.) Just doesn't seem like they do much but worry and tell people what to do, or at least don't get enough screen time. Hunters out there getting shit done putting their life on the line. Maybe just for little things, but without them how'd we get on Oryx's ship in D1? I'd say Eris and Saint standout in their classes but the rest just seem to sit around the tower, even Shaxx the almighty I've only seen open a door for people lol. Also I hate to be that guy but they were bets not dares lmao hunters don't need a leader and no one wants to be one. That's why the bets were made. I also think Uldren would be a bad leader since he's not a Guardian and he seems to have weak ties with everybody where the past leaders had actual contacts. Tbh if Bungie tried making an actual player the HV then that'd actually kinda make sense given their role, and people could compete for it if they wanted it would be pretty interesting but seems pretty out there.

Hi loved your post it make a lot of sense that the old missing hunter vanguard returns or that hunter main get made the vanguard as in there story they killed you know who. One think thought scorn cayde I thought scorn was only called that were revived by one of the Barrons so there for can only revive fallen
-
Thanks for the lore piece. The only piece of lore i read on this was tommy's matchbook. I knew about andal taniks and cayde but kauko was new for me
-
We don't think
Ana Bray
will take up residence in the Tower and become the new Hunter Vanguard? Seems kinda obvious.
-
Yo there's a sparrow in d1 called the Swiftriver. I'm curious where you got this lore. Is it on some bungie article?
-
Ayyy that's pretty cool
-
Pretty interesting topic, and it also kinda shows that the whole argument whether "Uldren is the next vanguard cause he killed Cayde" or not is ultimately moot. If all of the previous dares failed for one reason or another, Cayde's dare won't ultimately affect Uldren's chance on becoming a vanguard either. It would instead come down to his experience, which there likely isn't much since he was one of the most recent Risen, and gaining at least Zavala's approval (which he would adamantly deny along with Ikora). Frankly, I would rather Eris be the one to take it up as she's the most capable, but she can't sit still long enough just like any other Hunter. Shiro is still MIA so the only other Hunter atm is Ana. As much as I don't trust Ana for the position, she might end up taking up the role if she indeed goes to the Tower following the Evacuation quest.
