I’ve decided to playthrough Halo 3 and try and save every single Marine/ODST/Elite that doesn’t have a scripted death, along with the “destined” but not scripted deaths I can prevent. (Example: The Warthog gunner on Tsavo Highway that gets ran over by a Chopper near the beginning.)
Also, by save, I mean every allied NPC I can get to the point where they will not follow me anymore due to code.
So far, I’ve done Sierra 117, I gave up on Crow’s Nest after trying to save the Marine being held upside down by a Brute farthest from Chief in the Crow’s Nest barracks. It’s possible to save him by making a nearly impossible throw with a Spike Grenade. I’ve also finished Tsavo Highway.
As difficult as this is, it honestly becomes worth it when I see a small army of 15+ Marines behind me.

This was my main way of clearing the barracks on most of my Crow's Nest runs. You can get the turret from the loft area of the garage where you have to defeat the hammer wielding Brute Chieftain. I saved 2 of the 3 Marines in that room that are being held up by Brutes.
