Elena is closest, then the farthest.
With nothing more than a swing of its arm the monster sends her flying. It happens too quickly for anyone to react. We can only watch, paralyzed.
A mountain of muscle and armor stands between us and our downed ship. I’ve heard stories of the size of Fallen nobles, but this…how could something so massive exist? It towers above us, meters tall. The wicked rifle it holds with only one hand is the size of a man.
We’re so pathetically small.
Twin horns trace through the air as its helmeted head looks to the rest of us. My blood freezes in my veins and time stops for one long, terrifying moment. No one needs to say his name. We all know who he is.
Draksis, the Ruthless Kell of Winter, has come to kill us.
Olly screams his rage as the remaining three Guardians raise their weapons. The Kell roars his own challenge as bullets pelt his armor, lunging with unnatural speed towards his next targets. Hendal shoves Javier out of the way, but the Titan doesn’t have enough time or luck to get himself to safety. Draksis’ mighty fist smashes Hendal straight down into the snow.
Then the Kell’s reinforcements arrive. Fallen rain down all around us from the Skiffs above, armed to the teeth with crackling blades and rifles. Any hope I had left of surviving disappears.
“Sal!”
I turn to the sound of Olly’s voice, too late to see Elta’s airborne body coming. She crashes into me and we fall into a heap, just in time to avoid the crossfire of bullets and Arc bolts.
Elta groans in pain and rolls off of me, “He threw me!”
“Stay down!” I warn, grabbing her arm. I twist my neck to look around. Beladona stands guard over us, moving in every direction to keep the pirates at bay. The others are scattered amongst the Fallen, battling the lesser pirates and the Kell at once. The hulking form of Draksis looms threateningly close, but he is distracted by the others for now.
“OLLY!” Beladona hollers, suddenly diving away from us. My eyes follow her path to see the Titan doubled over, clutching at his scorched chest. A Vandal leaps onto his back, driving both of its swords straight down into his neck. Olly’s legs buckle and he falls. The pirates surround him in moments, and Beladona is still too far. A small light flashes over the Titan’s corpse and the Fallen strike.
A wave of Light engulfs the battlefield.
