Writers of Offtopic, What is Your Favorite Element of Writing?

Hey guys, it’s me, the guy. Y’know, the guy that comments occasionally on things that you took note of once and then let your relevant neurons fade into obscurity? Alright, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Believe it or not, I write things sometimes—not often, but sometimes. If you search the deepest, darkest corners of b.net, you might find some of my writing or stories. As it happens, though, the vast majority of my work (even the work relevant to Offtopic) has never been posted. Much of it sits in documents, random stories, or compilations of information. Apologies, I digress. I’m pretty sure at this point I’m just trying to add actual content to my post, something I’m not good at. Anyways, I will say that those external stories and clumps of information are relevant to the topic at hand. Most writers share a love for writing as a whole, but I’d like to ask what, for you, is it that you just can’t get enough of? Is it character development? Dialogue? Combat? Systems? ——————— I, personally, absolutely love world building—can’t get enough of it. I love making lore, weapons, items, books, places, history, people, peoples, and everything in between. Typically, world-building ideas will swell up in my head until they reach and apex and melt away, leaving behind their final product, which I write. For example, I have long documents committed to both the Twilight Armory and it’s contents as well as the contents of the Lighthouse, something of Sylver’s interspatial library, observatory, and magical room of operations. That’s not even to mention the Ravenous Heart. IIIIII’m not very good at avoiding keeping things concise, and don’t know how to end posts. Please provide your input, I’d love to hear it (really). Uhm, toodaloo.

  • My favorite element of writing is probably Argon. Seriously though I'd have to say that I enjoy dialog the most. I love how it takes me in directions that I wasn't expecting.

  • I enjoy world building too. What I enjoy most, however, is writing mythology. It gives me an excuse to research various religions for inspiration and come up with bizzare concepts that may or may not have any bearing on the plot.

      Oh "elements" of writing... Well then, world building and character background, are my favorite. I can come up with a setting, maybe a rough plot and world lore. I can also eventually build up a solid character background either revolving around their personality or vice versa. I could come up with possible plot twists or underlying psychological trauma. Heck I could probably attempt to draw them! But actually writing it down in paragraphs on a book? Pfffft! My ideas will most likely just stay in bullet form until I grab motivation out of thin air!
double posting for superiority
• The kind of writing where I jot down notes... Then never look at them again cause it was just another side project... ;-;

    • Personally, my favorite part of writing is world building. I love delving deep into my setting’s lore, creating more and more in-depth nuances the farther and farther I go.

      • Diversity of characters and character development. Mysterious lore. I also like to incorporate fictional characters into real life, make them seem quite realistic and not very fabricated.

      • Parody stuff. Making people laugh might not be deep or enlightening... but it brings happiness nonetheless.

        • I love putting things together on the macro scale; making the overall plot of things, the kind of stuff you’d see in a summary. I also enjoy the actual writing on the micro scale, of course, but nothing beats taking a step back, and seeing the story as a whole!

        • Same here, I’ve got so many things that I’ve got to put down that I think I don’t have enough time to do so.

        • While I was doing the SCP series, I enjoyed coming up with mad ramblings in my head and then organizing them into a comprehensive documentation based around whoever I was writing about. Was thinking of doing something in a similar format but as something that wasn't SCPs and was more of my own thing that I would call Machines of Woe. But I'm still trying to come up with a proper prologue to introduce the idea.

            I also love lore stuffs and world building. I'm quite fond of overly long descriptions of monsters, disgusting things, and spooky scary places. It's actually a problem.

            • Varvatos doesn’t really know. It’s a little bit of everything; but it might be the way characters develop over time. That’s pretty huge in his stories.
