I'm a D1 veteran and I do not mind Bungie sunsetting our old gear

This is probably going to be extremely unpopular and draw a LOT of hate, but please hear me out. I have played Destiny 1 since launch. I played D1 consistently and only ever took a break from it once. I have over 2000 hours poured into D1. I'm saying this so you understand where I'm coming from when I say, I do not mind Bungie sunsetting our old gear in Destiny 2. I know just by saying that, people are going to be mad. But I clearly remember when Destiny The Taken King launched, a large portion of our past gear was left to the past and could not be used in higher light/power level activities in The Taken King. You could still use them in PvP where light/power level did not matter except in things like Iron Banner for example. You weren't forced to delete your old gear. You could vault it and pull it out for casual PvP. In Private Matches, you and your team could play with old weapons just for fun. You could go out to older destinations or activities with lower light/power levels to use them. You had freedom to use them however you wish in Destiny 1, they just weren't going to be useful in a endgame activity like raids or light level enabled PvP. So now we come to Destiny 2 and a similar thing is happening: our older gear is being left behind so that new weapons and armor can be used in the future. I think this is a good thing because it means the endgame PvE and PvP meta will change. In addition, there is absolutely going to be new weapons with godrolls that people will farm for. Not satisfied? Well I present to you example 1 from D1: Hung Jury. This weapon was a medium rate of fire Scout Rifle from Dead Orbit with a MONSTER GOD ROLL. Triple Tap with Firefly. Omg this thing was a destroyer in PvE AND PvP. Just search D1 Hung Jury on Youtube and you'll see what I mean. Back to my main point. What I'm getting at is that we shouldn't be too mad about this. Bungie is not deleting your gear. They are not forcing you to use new weapons or armor. You could still play the game and use old stuff. You just wouldn't be able to do high end activities. Like with The Taken King, if sunsetting old gear means moving on and trying new stuff, its a compromise I'm willing to make. As long as Bungie provides a fair number of new weapons and armor in Destiny 2 Beyond Light, then I am fine with saying goodbye to older and worn out armor. You might also ask me, wouldn't you rather have no sunsetting at all? And my answer is of course. If we could get new stuff and still use our old stuff for higher end activities, it would be great. Old and new players would be happy. But since that is not happening, I've just come to accept what is going to be done. And that is all that I have, please be civil in the comments below.

    • There is a difference between sunsetting and simply making entire seasons obsolete. Gnawing Hungers are dropping right now in this season. The exact same Gnawing Hungers that have dropped since Season of the Drifter. Bungie is allowing you to use one, but not the other, even though they are the exact same gun with the exact same rolls. It would be different if Bungie were to say, we are sunsetting Gnawing Hunger for this season, but next season you can pull it out of the vault because we are adding it to the loot pool again. What they are doing instead is adding it to the loot pool and making you grind for it again, even though you already have one.

      • I'm not wild about content I paid for being deleted from the game while they ask for more money to add less than they are taking out. That on top of gear I really enjoy becoming useless... It's just bad design.

        • As a day one destiny one player with I disagree with you. Sunsetting sunsetted all interest I had left. My gear matters and whether you like it or not I am opposed to them making all those masterworks and all those mats spent master working useless.

          • I think too many people play entirely for the loot. Now they are mad that their toys are being put away. I'm glad they are sunsetting gear. The game is about the gameplay and challenge. If you can't handle a sandbox mix-up then stick to your old weapons and play the old content for as long as you can. This game isn't entirely about playing with the toys you've collected and more about overcoming challenges with the tools you have. At least, that's what it used to be. So go ahead and cry about meta changes. In the long run your selfish desire is just going to hurt the game. Change is natural. It's due time for a change.

            • Seriously, what's the point of it? -Almost all weapons are just practically the same thing with a different name/model -Still usable in a good amount of the game -Exotics won't have a cap, so power creep will still exist -Armor is just stat points -Most new weapons... are OLD weapons I just don't get how this system would change anything. The only reasons I can think of for this system is to increase hours grinding, making people drop their pinnacles, and enticing people to spend money on the Transmog system. I can't find any other reasons that make sense.

            • Just because you are a vet of d1 doesnt make your opinion any more value. Sunsettting is a bad excuse to sell you back all your old gear.

              • I think THE WAY they are sunsetting is lazy. They say power creep and I understand making people re-gind to keep them busy but why not different ways? They could create a “pinnacle sphere” that players had to grind for that raised the max light of an item. Heck, even made it an item you bought with silver. But the way they plan to take are hard earnd gear away ONLY to reissue [some of] it at a later date is outright lazy and unimaginative.

No. I've played significantly more than those hours just in D2. I will NOT regrind all over again for reissued loot, loot where I lose all my stat tracking on for no better reason than giving a hamster wheel. We can't use any of our gear in almost every aspect of the game, including the most popular and important PvP modes, Iron Banner and Trials respectively, seasonal activities, seasonal quests, Gambit (so help me if one more person says you can...), NFs, all new raids....leaving what? old raids only that aren't being removed, the least popular PvP and activities where your weapons don't matter anyway...use blues, punch... Endgame metas will only change with Sandbox changes. If one weapon is too powerful, it should have been checked first or subsequently balanced. It won't replace sandbox balancing nor provide innovative weapons of which only innovation will. No, I won't be chasing Godrolls again when weapons that routinely figure in the region's of 10,000 variants and are hard to come by have one year expiry date. The godrolling investment > payoff. Only minimal investment will = short lifespan, forced obsolescence payoff. Bungie IS effectively deleting our gear don't kid yourself. That's EXACTLY what it EFFECTIVELY AMOUNTS TO. Old, worn out armour? What planet do you hail from? If you play BOTH PvE and PvP getting a min-maxed stat distribution was a year long quest....I've only just got ONE SET I'm happy with and now it's been forcibly removed. No thanks, it doesn't work. It works for those who won't care what there gear is, who want minimal investment in an attempt to fix their boredom of the game. It won't even do that - only content does that and that doesn't need Sunsetting either.

                • If you're going to take something from me it would be nice to get something of equal value in return. I love Go Figure and Spare Rations, and if you're going to take those from me you have to give me something of equal or greater value. If Bungie can do that I won't have a problem.

                • Taken King offered double the weapons, and then some, as replacements for what was being left in Year 1. If Bungie offered so many weapons and exotics like Taken King that would be different. But they aren't, Sunsetting came alone so you are drawing uncomparible topics as the same.

                • The Taken King you could play with just about any weapon. Didn’t even need touch of malice or black spindle. Becaussseeee, oh yeah. Bungie created new viable legendaries. If you really think this is a good thing despite having a vault load of weapons that I have to regrind simply to add 300 more light, I don’t know what to say. It’s preposterous.

                  • I’ve been playing since D1 Beta and I am completely okay with sunsetting. I think it may actually bring back a purpose to play for most players. The new Pyramid weapons are actually pretty good and introduce some nice perks.

                  • Sunsetting is fine but we know that bungie will reintroduce those weapons again and again. That’s the main reason why everyone is hating the idea of sunsetting.

                    • Mostly share a similar view point on this but is it really just endgame? Any new content from the season pass and what not also has a power level limit and now for two seasons those have been public events on our old destinations. I would have trouble calling these endgame like nightfall and such since, unless I missed something, wont give us pinnacle gear or even a chance for it like the others. Now let's be brutally honest on one big reason it's now getting a big backlash. Bungie has effed up this season in what it did. We have certain guns a lot have grinded god rolls of brought to the world loot pool and no changes to them outside of the little icon in the corner and unlike the old beloved ones they have a higher power cap. This is just hurting the reasoning they had for it and giving the idea of them not actually being able to bring in a lot of new guns. Not even that but they can't be bothered to change some perks up or add new ones to the brought back gear. Mean seriously they made some new perks this season and could've thrown some into the gun roll possibilities for other guns to atleast somewhat justify making people regrind them. Instead of being something that has potential it instead feels just like them crapping over everything people have done and time they spent.

                    • People’s main argument is that you have to re-grind for your gear. They forget... you don’t grind for gear. Only exotics and quests have grinds. Legendary gear can be easily obtained.
