D2's New Target Market

An idea just popped into my head while talking with a clanmate about these changes that are coming in a few weeks. I think I get why you're sunsetting and doing all this stuff. It's not to create new content or to prevent power creep: it's to focus on your new target market. You want those casuals. The ones who download the free games on their phones and play on the way to work or on the way home from work. It's a huge market. Lots of advertising opportunities. That's probably why you spent so much effort to get D2 on Stadia. That's why you're sunsetting. You know they won't stick around for more than a few months so they won't care/notice things. But you want some way to keep your current player base - the ones who are supporting you. So you release more lore. The casuals don't care about the lore. It's only us. So you give us the occasional DLC to keep us around but keep things changing for the casuals so that they won't get bored. I think this'll belly flop and it'll affect your future title releases. But hey, you're in it for the profit so I don't begrudge you. I'll still play PvP. I'm no good at it but sunsetting doesn't affect PvP since light level is equalised for everyone. And I'm already used to you nerfing everything in PvP. So I'll be your casual until you lock PvP behind a season pass or until sunsetting affects PvP. I don't mind playing the looter-shooter equivalent of that jellybean tetris game. Or that word-scramble game where you connect the letters to make your word. It's all casual game play. Nothing serious, no need to grind, no need to collect.
