So I thought that maybe if I could determine how far Phobos has moved from its current-day orbit, I could also figure out how much time has passed (therefore determining how far into the future Destiny takes place). The best I could do for the angular diameter is approx 5 degrees. If we use the formula:
Apparent Angle in degrees/57.3 degrees = True diameter in kilometres/Distance in kilometres
We get that the distance at which Phobos is orbiting Mars is 252,12 km. The current orbit of Phobos in real life is 9380 km from Mars.
*9380 km - 252,12 km = 9128 km = S
We also know that Phobos is moving towards Mars at V=1,8 cm/year (which is 5,708e-9 m/s).
So through the S=Vt formula we can determine how much time has passed. We get that
t=16e15 seconds, and now... That equals... 507356671 years?
Ok so after doing some research and with the help of those lovely peeps over at reddit, I realized that the Cabal tempered with the orbit of Phobos. Rendering my calculations "irrelevant" at best... Well at least now we know the distance at which Phobos orbits Mars, heh... Extremely useful information, I know...
! EDIT ! : I am an idiot. I accidentally wrote 1.6e15 as 16e15 ! This makes a BIG difference. 507356671 years become 50735667. You know what else is going to happen in 50 Million years? That's right Phobos will crash into Mars. Now I'm not saying that Destiny is set 50 million years into the future. But this does mean that Bungie took all of this into account when choosing how big Phobos will appear in Mars' sky (I derived the 5 degrees I mentioned at the beginning from in-game observations of Phobos). I honestly think this is pretty cool.

Phobos was pulled out of its natural orbit by Psion Flayers, events of Destiny are only several hundred years in the future
-
Cool, and how far away do you think Bungie has separated from Destiny?
-
But.....50 million years, there would be nothing left of EDZ ruins
-
Kinda like when you find out how much time passed in Horizon Zero Dawn

Edited by Grays_KS27: 4/20/2020 1:05:50 AMIt was revealed in the Taken King that the Psion Flayers moved Phobos out of its orbit and to its new orbit. As for what time period Destiny takes place in, here’s what we know:
The Traveler arrived in the Sol system around the year 2014 and Humanity made contact with it shortly after. This is when the Golden Age started. In the Brephos I entry of the Marasenna, Mara reveals that the Golden Age lasted “two centuries,” meaning the Collapse started some time around 2214.
“You love Earth the way all adolescents secretly adore two-century-old video of nai nai and ye ye dancing on New Year's Eve.” https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/brephos-i#book-marasenna
The Black Armory Papers and other lore excerpts let us know that the Collapse didn’t last very long, but most likely lasted between a week and a month. In the Forgeries entry of Stolen Intelligence, the Hidden operative’s report reveals that the City Age has lasted more than 300 years.
“radiocarbon dating clearly identifies the earliest prints as more than three hundred years old.” https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/forgeries#book-stolen-intelligence
Then there’s the general comments that the Dark Ages lasted “centuries.” This means at least 200 years passed, though it’s very likely that the Dark Ages lasted far longer than that. So we can put together this rough estimate: Golden Age: 200 years Dark Ages: 200+ years City Age: 300+ years Total: 700+ years That means Destiny takes place in at least 2714.
TL:DR Kinda far, but within space-walking distance.
