It seems a lot of people are afraid of weapon retirement or think it's a bad idea. I personally think it's a good idea if implemented properly, but it's important Bungie does this right so people don't feel like their time investment is made worthless.
Firstly, in the director's cut where we heard about weapon retirement we were told the "lifespan" of a legendary weapon will be around 9-15 months. I see this as meaning a weapon will be "retired" once the fall expansion comes out closest to giving it one year of life. For example, if weapon retirement had been happening all along, Forsaken and black armory weapons would have retired in shadowkeep, and joker's wild, penumbra, shadowkeep, and season of dawn weapons would retire in the next fall expansion. Alternatively, it could be simply that they would retire a year after being introduced. Either way there are ways to give players a little more time with their weapons. If it is the first system I mentioned, they could make 12 months the minimum lifespan, so that black armory weapons would also be infuseable up until year 4. If it is that weapons will just retire a year or so after they release, this could simply be extended to 15-18 months.
Now, perhaps more importantly, here is an idea I had to prevent weapon retirement from making old weapons feel as useless. They could make retired weapons still infuseable to the power cap, but just not up to the pinnacle cap, so you would only have a disadvantage in very high level activities, and not quite as much of a disadvantage.
TL;DR Weapon retirement should not occur on weapons until they are at least 12 months old, and they could extend the lifespan to about 15 or 18 months. Furthermore, retired weapons could be infuseable up to the power cap but just not beyond that to the pinnacle cap.
