The last king of Paradisum was King Dezi. He was an old, yet strong man with long white hair and a large mustache. He wore a suit of white and gold armor that was shrouded in a massive cape of the same colors.
King Dezi had two sons. The eldest son was named Erphos and the youngest was named Domund. Erphos was confident in himself, but extremely headstrong. Domund, however, was calm, quiet and careful. The brothers often bickered amongst each other, but when their father was around, they all came together as a happy family.
The king spent a moderate portion of his time sitting upon his throne in his castle, contemplating the requests that had been given to him by his subjects and coming up with solutions to the problems in his kingdom. The throne room was large and filled with tables and chairs that were meant for guests and people of high reputation.
Stained glass windows of different colors were scattered across the walls and the ceiling, altering the colors of the room periodically by using the moving sun to light up the area in different positions. The stained glass was positioned to where the room would be a different color depending on the time of day. During the morning, the room would be yellow, and during the evening, the room would be purple.
On one day, the king’s servant, Serphis, entered the throne room with a pile of stacked paper in his arms. It was time for the King to receive weekly letters and requests from the citizens of Paradisum. King Dezi spoke to his servant in a low, gravelly voice.
Dezi: “That letter pile seems much bigger than the last one, Serphis. This isn’t some sort of plot to assassinate me by exhausting me with work, is it?”
Serphis: “Of course not, my lord. The kingdom is growing everyday and the Emissary Corps is inviting more realms to Paradisum.”
Dezi: “I was jesting, you know.”
Serphis: “I am well aware. I’m just reminding you of what’s happening in your kingdom since you enjoy every second of sitting in this empty room of yours with nothing to do but stare at the door and await my return.”
Dezi: “Actually, I don’t enjoy that and I spend a lot of time in my own kingdom.”
Serphis: “I was jesting too.”
Dezi: “Oh... By the way, what are my sons doing at this time?”
Serphis placed the stack of letters on a table next to Dezi’s throne.
Serphis: “I believe both princes are in the training hall. They seem to be motivated more than usual because of the upcoming selection. Speaking of which, have you any idea of which one you will choose to be your successor?”
Dezi: “No, not yet. They both have their strengths and flaws. Erphos is strong and fearless, but too confident in himself and not confident enough in others. Domund is smart and skillful, but he lacks necessary communication with others even though he is completely capable of speaking. I’ll have to wait for the final test before I can make a decision.”
Serphis: “Well, why not check up on them? You know that they can be a little unstable when they are alone together.”
Dezi: “I suppose you’re right. I have one last question. Is the battle ground for the selection test almost fully prepared?”
Serphis: “Almost. It should only take another week. Are you sure that they’ll be ready in that amount of time.”
Dezi slowly stood up and began to walk towards the door of the room.
Dezi: “I am completely aware of what both of my sons are capable of. I guarantee that another week is more than enough time than they need.”
The king left his throne room that had been filled with blue light that symbolized the afternoon of the day. The clanking of his armor echoed across the halls of the castle as he walked, but the noise completely silenced as he covered his large cape across his body.
He had to arrive in the training hall unexpected if he were to see his sons in their unsupervised state.
