Lets not forget that the golden age of the flood took place under a regime similar to this one

Politics was taboo then. And tho it was before my time, it was as far as I can tell, a golden age. From a trolling/shit posting perspective, rules just make shenanigans that much better. I for one am not giving up on offtopic. I want this to be the dawn of a new age that will give us this generation's porch day and clockman. All we need is a little more imagination, and a little less toxicity to build for ourselves a new empire more glorious than the last.

  • The Flood had some of the strictest rules of any forum I went to-- "no politics/religion" was the tip of the iceberg. Here are the forum rules from 10ish years ago. Some blasts from the past: - no epic phail - no care cup - no leetspeak - no CoD4 vs Halo - no blogposting I think those rules did make discussion better, and these new ones are a good idea, though FWIW I also think the internet (including here) is a far kinder place today than it was 10 years ago.

    • I think the community is made by its people and not the rules, but it’s a welcome change nonetheless. Radical bait posting of that manner was old 10 years ago and doesn’t have any place in an actual community. I just don’t see people here as being particularly passionate about their stake in the community beyond occasionally messaging a few users. Projects like The Community Carnage, Coup, Installation 01, Thee Warriors, Bungieball and The Friends List only came about because they were founded on a vision that bought people together to interact with one another. With these rule changes I think we’ll see a decline in activity from previously prominent figures because they don’t actually have anything else to say.

I'm surprised they allowed such leniency, given that before this website was rather strict. It was cleaner then, though nothing was perfect and forum drama still occurred. Though I found it understandable at the time, the influx of new members from Destiny's release would have overwhelmed the ninjas. This reinstating of the old rule wipes away a good chunk of low effort posts that filled the forum with trash. I'm pleased to see it returned after these past few years, nothing good ever really came out of them besides mild enjoyment for some, and toxicity for others. A lot of people have been bemoaning "the death of Offtopic" over this, as if this forum was only a political and religious forum. It's not, and should have never fulfilled such a role in my opinion. In fact, if the moderation team goes to where I think it's going we'll be returning to the more quiet days of Bnet where "quiet" is the equivalent of "not being overfilled with trash and hate". This includes the Destiny forums, or how a lot of people refer to them as, the salt mines. Quite a few good members of our community left over this (heck I left in part because of this for a time), and I'm afraid how the Destiny forums are now also deters good members from staying. I agree with Cobra down below, all it did was cause division amongst community members. Nothing good ever came out of it, and it never will. edit: ok cobras post above cuz im too loved

Oh, you think the new rules are your ally. But you merely adopted these rules; I was born with them, moulded by them. I didn't see my first political shit post until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but IDIOCY!

    • Rules (or lack thereof) have little to do with what made this a place where I spent literal years of my life. Once upon a time this website's purpose was to foster and cultivate a shared sense of community (and the entire experience was designed around promoting that idea); now its a glorified help desk (again, designed around that primary purpose). Expecting a community to reestablish itself here is like expecting a community to emerge from the AT&T forums.

All we need is a little more imagination, and a little less toxicity to build for ourselves a new empire more glorious than the last.
Here's the thing, #Offtopic would never have become so toxic had the webteam never blindly enacted all the changes they made from B.old to B.next. Over time they have SLOWLY reverted the forums back to more and more of what B.old was. It should have never taken this long. The dysfunction and lawlessness of B.next was immediately evident to anyone around at that time. From day one of it I told those I knew that were ninjas that it was a terrible idea and it was going to wreck the community. Thing was, they had no say either. For what it's worth, I'm glad they are making these changes back toward when things here were more goofy, but not hateful. Back then, you had to actually try to make controversial posts and not get banned. It took actual creativity to not get banned for them. Dare I say that trolling was only done by smart people, because only they could navigate the gray areas around the ban hammer. Not discounting today's total absence of knowledge of what words can / will get you auto banned, that didn't exist and needs to end NOW. Reinstate the -blam!- filter that simply removes any offensive or "offensive" words, and no harm done. But then we had clearly defined rules, and more than not here abided by them. We had moderation people who were active with the community, and did their jobs with distinction. Everything about how this place worked was cooler. Not perfect, but blatant hate and intolerable posting simply did not see the light of day. Once posted it was usually shut down within the hour or less. The thing then was that you didn't know what the other person(s) political or theological beliefs were, and for good reason. None of us need to know them. All they do is cause division. I don't think this place will ever be what it was. Lightning rarely strikes the same place twice. It all started then with a game / games we all came here for at some point because we liked the games Bungie made at that time. For many of us that no longer applies, so the fundamental reason we all came together here no longer exists. So it's up to us to make this work, or not.

          • I agree, while I may not like the change, it obviously has worked in the past. We can make it work again.
