Bungie never confirmed Trials is coming back after donating is complete. It's all community speculation and rumors from datamine files. Which aren't always accurate. Plenty of files make it into the game but are never actually released. Sometimes files are just developer keyholders.

I guess I missed too that a ton of players were increasing the resonance of the planetary obelisks, so it very well may be the slow down was because of that and perhaps not players giving up on it.
