One common thing is that alot of people forget, misunderstsod or simply diden't think about two major things. (Note, apologize for grammar ahead of time.)
Those things are, first and mostly that the 5 year plan is counted from the launch date of Destiny 2. hence 5 years of destiny 2 is the road map currently. That ends in september 2022. Silly enough alot of people get this wrong so this is just an FYI. This means by itself little tho but it will add up later.
The second thing is that Destiny 3 has allready been in development with Activision since 2018 or even earlier like late 2017 based on anonthenine. There was even ment to be a Destiny 4 based on the contract with Activision. Now however the IP and what to do with Destiny is litrally all up to Bungie. That for now did lead to a Year 5 road map ahead.
But! There is also a third thing! Phil Spencer said in an interview that all games on the xbox platform will run on all xbox one series for one year. After that it will be next gen only. Meaning because Sony is less harsher with what hardware games run on, this will quite litrally be where the bottleneck for games will change as they don't need to run on Xbox one any longer. 2020 holiday is the release date of the consoles and then add a year, you get Q4 2021.
That's very juicy because Bungie nearly allways release mayor content DLC's in september aswell as the main vanilla game's. So theoretically what year would be the earliest year for Bungie to release Destiny 3 if they wish to have it next gen only? 2022 September. What year does the road map end? 2022 September.
This is it. I want to end with this qoute from interview 44 days ago.
Bungie isn’t done just yet with its plan for Destiny 2 updates, but it seems the developer is already thinking about Destiny 3 – it’s just not ready to share any details quite yet. In an interview with PCGamesN, the studio’s comms director, David ‘DeeJ’ Dague, says we’ll “have to wait a little longer” before we hear anything about a potential sequel.

Great post. I think your justified in your assessment of 2022 especially considering the info from Phil Spencer. However, I'm more inclined to believe Bungie might push for 2021. Sadly, I don't have much proof to back that up but there are a few considerations worth paying attention to... This is more of a personal opinion but I think Bungie will have a hard time of selling another 2 years' worth of Season Passes to cover 2020/21 and 2021/22 until your proposed date of D3's release. I say this because as next-gen consoles become a bigger focus for people & new games come out, I think Bungie will face a lot of competition for people's time, especially going into Y2 of new consoles. For example, I'm already eye-ing up CP2077 and Dying Light 2 as my Autumn/Winter games. This problem will only get more difficult for Bungie to manage as D3's release date gets closer. Seasons are pretty barebones at the moment but as D3's release date gets closer and closer, the level of seasonal content will no doubt get less as development priorities change. Leading on from that, and still using your date of 2022, I could see this next year's season pass being "good" and "packed" with content but then the following year, 2021/22, would see an overall decline in content throughout the year until D3 releases in 2022. Essentially what I'm getting at is that each year, we have a big DLC & season pass with a gradual decline in content until the next big DLC. While I think your assessment of 2022 is logical and most likely true, I just can't see Bungie really wanting another 2 years of seasons even though, now I think about it, that might be something they reluctantly have to do. However, with all that said, I think 2022 is a more reasonable timeframe since it would give the greatest chance & amount of time for people to make the change to next gen. If we do get another 2 year long season passes then I could very well see the 2nd year being given the Rise of Iron treatment where Bungie says "hey guys, this is it. D3 is out on next-gen only next year so get saving and here's RoI 2.0 for the next year." Anyway, I'm sure there are some other things I've forgotten to mention but I'll leave it there. No one wants an essay to read as much as I like discussing this kind of speculation.

Well this post got buried.

I don’t like waiting, but I’d prefer if they delayed D3. It needs to be as good as possible, and they’ll need to take their time for that to happen.
