There's a bug in the Tower social space's inactivity detection. Basically, if you sit in the tower for a bit, you hit some limbo threshold between tower inactivity and actually being kicked. So when you start an activity from the destination menu it triggers the kick when it realizes you're leaving the tower as if the game was taking the credit.
It's a minor bug, but it seems silly and annoying that there's a hidden threshold for inactivity in the tower.

I was standing still, shooting a single enemy that would spawn in front of me. After about 10-15 minutes, it kicked me to orbit. Activity detection is no more or less broken than the game as a whole.
