Saint-14: First Guardian we’ve seen use all 3 elements
Several times in lore we have been told that Guardians can use all 3 elements/Subclasses (Void, Arc, Solar). This can be difficult for Guardians to accomplish, as a few of the Subclasses are difficult to learn, but we have seen some Guardians use more than one Subclass. The most prominent examples are the following:
[spoiler]Osiris- shown using Solar in lore and the opening clip of Curse of Osiris, as well as Arc in the Fall of Osiris comic.
Ikora Rey- seen many times in lore and game using Void, as well as Arc in the Taken King dialogue and Red War trailer.
Zavala- seen using Void in the Red War and Arc at Twilight Gap in the comics and trailers.[/spoiler]
But these Guardians have only ever been seen using 2 elements. We knew a Guardian could use all 3 elements, but we have never actually seen a character use all three before other than ourselves.
But now Saint-14 has been seen using all 3, making him the first we have seen doing so.

So that’s it. Saint-14 is the first Guardian we have seen using all three elements. It’s very good to finally see.

[spoiler]I’m loving the discussion about Guardians’ use of Light, strength in the Light, and all that.
But I feel that many have misinterpreted what I’m saying, misinterpreted the point I’m making, and/or even ignored some parts of my post entirely. So, to clarify:
Saint-14 is the only Guardian [b]THAT WE (the people who play and read lore) HAVE SEEN USE ALL THREE ELEMENTS[/b] [u]not counting ourselves[/u].
It is very very very very likely that other Guardians like Osiris and Ikora could use all the elements. Saint-14 is just the first who has been [b]depicted[/b] using all 3. Osiris has not been seen using Arc; Ikora has not been seen using Solar.
Many people also bring up Cayde to discuss the elements he uses (yes, he most likely uses Arc, as hinted by the Flux Grenades in the Taken King “Cayde’s Stash” mission). Keep in mind that this post is about Saint using 3, not every single Guardian that uses more than one element. I only listed Osiris, Ikora, and Zavala to give examples of prominent users of more than one. I didn’t have any reason to talk about Cayde.
It has been confirmed in lore that [b]not every Guardian can use every element.[/b] The best examples are the three Taken King Subclasses. Specifically, Ikora Rey states very clearly that not every Warlock/Guardian can learn to use Arc/Stormcaller, and it is impossible for some. Some Subclasses can be learned through practice, but others can remain forever out of reach.
Also, Saint-14 being the first we’ve seen using all 3 isn’t necessarily a testament to his power. Several Guardians are stronger than him, but we just haven’t seen if they can also use all 3 elements.[/spoiler]

1 ReplyIkora can use all 3 and so can shaxx. I think hunters are really the only class were learning all 3 is difficult since according to D1 lore few hunters can connect to the void.

1 ReplyCayde uses solar and arc. A D1 mission had him commenting on his flux grenades he left at a stash not triggering. In D1 it was stated that nightstalkers were extremely rare. It is likely that all guardians can learn almost any ability regardless of class based off of lore about the drifter. There is also evidence of this with felwinter (warlock) using a shoulder charge and hunters learning blink in D1. However, learning to use even same class subs is likely a very long process that could be compared to mastering a martial art in real life. This would explain why most of the guardians that are seen to use multiple elements have been around a long time. The rarity (near nonexistence) of multi class guardians is likely due to the classes channeling the light in very different ways, making learning other class abilities even more time consuming than different elements. Warlocks for the most part just use concentrated raw overpowering light, relying on mostly unshaped light being turned loose on enemies. Hunters are the opposite, almost every use of the light they have shapes it into a weapon. Titans tend to absorb the light into themselves as more of a powerup, with limited ability to make simple constructs such as barriers, bubbles, and shields. Solar titans seem to have more in common with hunters though, but that matches the exile nature associated with them.

But we are literally one of the most powerful guardians in existence. Yes, in-game there are millions of us. But canonically there are just 1 of us. There's part of me that just thinks that the entire lore and back story of our character is that they just really love fighting and couldn't care less about anything else. Therefore they follow orders as long as it leads them to a tough battle so we can get stronger. TLDR: Guardian sword logic time.

So first off not really true side classes of specific nature outside of Golden gun, hammers, self res, nova bomb maybe. Others are just infusing light into the weapon of choice or out right palpatine tricks. Also the elements themselves in actual reality wouldn’t be all that special. It’s simply a game mechanic.

I was more surprised he can do blade barrage. Edit: okay people I get it. Transmat. Cayde is just so flashy, I assume he’d have something more obnoxious.

She can use an Arc Melee ability, closely followed by a Solar Grenade, and then let off a Nova Bomb with no downtime in between. Even Saladin is amazed by this ability, as he has seen something similar developing in Felwinter years prior, but nothing close to the mastery she shows.

5 RepliesHe should definitely become the Titan mentor. Maybe not vanguard commander per se, as he gave up that title himself, but he could be someone who teaches Titans the true way to be a Titan. And his first lesson would be dismantling the One Eyed Mask

2 RepliesWe should be able to switch subclasses via the dpad on the fly. Also gernaids. No more waving at the boss with some emote. Allow us to use it from something useful. Just have it switch to emote mode at the tower and perhaps a toggle to turn on it you want or need it.

5 RepliesI wonder what honestly defines an individual as being a certain class. And if it were possible to have mixtures. Like someone using gunslinger but also nova bomb. And if we could even cross elements. Like someone being a solar sentinel. Or a void strider.

3 RepliesYou think it might be a strength of light thing? Like our character is so strong in the light, we can harness all three subclasses with ease. However, Zavala, Cayde, and Ikora, strong as they are, do not have the strength of light to be able to manage, nor contain three subclasses, so they can only handle 2. We’ve heard plenty of times that Saint has tremendous light, and perhaps it is due to that, that he can wield all three subclasses as we can, he is unique in the sense that his light is remarkable.

2 RepliesSome theory suspect that Lord Felwinter also could use abilities from all three classes but only two kind were known for sure till now then we saw Dominus Ghaul was using all three right after stolen the Traveler's power. From lore and story side it isn't that far from impossible for one individual be able to learn and practices different craft. Also this similar concept been seen adapted in to many other mmorpg games such as Red Mage from FFXIV and others. As for game play and mechanics in Destiny it might be dev choice to limited a character per class as they saw fit at time of early game design then we all ride along till now.
