An average player’s perspective on skill-based matchmaking

So I’ve been playing a lot of iron banner... I am an average player in the crucible, I have my games where I absolutely tear it up, And I have rough matches, i’m sure this sounds familiar. I have never pub stomped Anyone, I repeat, I have never pub stomped anyone, at any time. Even if I put together a full team full of competent players, almost every match is white knuckle and very difficult, I take no issue with this. However, in my experience SBMM produces the following experiences consistently; 1. The experience of binary matches, meaning one team beats the shit out of the other team and vice versa. 2. An increase of latency based anomalies such as melee hits not registering, as well as guardians taking either no damage or less damage. 3. Poor team balancing, especially in instances where I am playing with friends of different skill levels. If I play with another solid player, some of the lesser skilled players on our team cannot keep up with the competition.
this has led to certain friends who aren’t as skilled in the crucible, simply not wanting to play with myself or other friends who are at higher skill levels
I cannot claim to know other people’s experiences in regards to matchmaking, so I would ask that in the comments, I would be afforded the same respect. I think that there is a large disconnect between the stated goals of SBMM and the actual experience that it produces. On the forums, when people say that they are unhappy with the experience associated with SBMM, it is often assumed that they take an issue with fair play in matchmaking, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. For large sections of the Destiny community, the experience of SBMM is the opposite of everything that pro SBMM players are defending. It’s no secret that many people are unhappy with the crucible, at all levels of skill. I propose that as a community, we navigate the discussion away from the binary battle between SBMM and anti-SBMM, To a discussion surrounding the idea that matchmaking should be better for all players. I don’t claim to have the answer, as I understand that there are a lot of factors that play into it such a skill gap, new players entering the game, the interaction between pro players and working adults, etc. maybe a different discussion could produce a better answer. Considering the constant feedback of how terrible the crucible experience is for many players, I believe it’s worth a shot.

In my opinion there is no SBMM in destiny 2. If there is it’s so incredibly bad at doing it’s job that I never notice. The amount of unbalanced teams and teams of 2 good players and 4 mediocre ones I’ve seen is far too high if SBMM actually exists. If SBMM existed I would be going up against players around my skill level, which while it sometimes happens I more often go up against players worse than me, or far better than me.
