Ok. From the TOP! #1. One day, the traveler showed up in our system. With the whole "miracles" from it like terraforming planets and whatnot? Humanity had a grand golden age. It lasted hundreds of years (came from D1) and human lifespans tripled. Created new technologies, etc. #2. Shortly after each disappearance of the Traveler to a new planet? Something smacked us universally across the board. Each threat was different and no correlation could be gained from it besides one thing: They were all after the Traveler and were enemies of it. #3. Warlords appear on earth after the great collapse was over. They are referred to primarily as Risen. Warlords fight... and fight... and fight... until the Iron Lords form a union. The Iron Lords begin the restoration of peace. #4. Sometime between the Iron Lords growing in number? The pilgram guard, comprised of the first guardians NOT aligned with the Iron Lords begin to protect travelers on the roads. Warlords become scarce as the iron lords rise and the pilgrim guard begins attacking the Fallen showing up all over the place. #5. The Last City location, now a massive collection of tents begins to rebuild. Humanity rising up to what we know now (there is A LOT which goes on in between #1 and now, but this is the gist of it) #6. Last City begins utilizing guardians as explorers and allows for the formation of the vanguard. Representatives to speak on our behalf. Due to the treatment from the Warlords over the years however, people are spectical and a new form of governing arises called the Consensus which consists of the last city leadership, the vanguard, the factions, and Lord Shaxx, a former warlord who is independent of any group. #7. Since that point, D1 takes over.

If you land in the tower and head to the hangar (from spawn go left) you'll find an npc named Amanda Holliday. Talk to her and go through the campaigns in order Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and then if you bought them Forsaken and then Shadowkeep. That should explain it very well. If you are still confused and only interested in the backstory and over all story of the game I highly reccomend reading the lore on IshtarCollective.net or watching MyNameIsByf on YouTube. His lore videos are very well made and he has a 3 hour long video that explains the entire timeline up to the release of ShadowKeep. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you haven’t played the campaigns. The main storyline. Go to Amanda Holliday in the Tower. Start with Red War, then Curse of Osiris, then Warmind, then Forsaken, then Shadowkeep.
