Ever since the Darkness started sending us message, guardian after guardian in this sub have stated that they will side with the Darkness given the chance. However unbelievably stupid and hasty their decision may be, there are a few reasons for it.
The primary one is that they have become disillusioned with the Light, and the Traveler itself, and also they have listened and believed the Darkness’ account of the Traveler or Gardener, regardless of the fact that it may not be the whole truth. They believe the Traveler Evil and Darkness Good, and drink up its words readily.
Some of us who have stayed loyal or are still on the fence have asked ourselves, “why hasn’t the Traveler spoken, if it’s alive? What is it’s take on this?”
The thing is, it actually has, though not in the way you’d think.
That vision we had, back in D2 vanilla, the Dark Forest, the End Credits scene, the Forsaken Subclass Tree missions, that was all the Traveler.
You see, the traveler doesn’t speak to us. It shows us. Instead of telling us it’s interpretation or trying to deceive us, it shows us what it wants to tell us.
That’s the difference between the Traveler and the Darkness. The Darkness tells us what it wants to say. It very possibly has omitted several important details that would’ve made these guardians think twice about freely falling into the Abyss. The Traveler, instead of deceiving us (for how can you deceive someone if you do not speak?) it allows us to make our own interpretations, and doesn’t outright say “This is good” or “this is bad”.
The 2 are similar, however, in a key way: both require a vessel. The traveler used the words of past guardians and the Speaker, while the Darkness literally reached inside our Ghost and possessed it (which in my opinion is rather gay), with us having no say in the matter.
It’s also rather silly that we would side so readily with the race that almost drove us to extinction, had the Traveler not intervened (and yes, the Traveler did intervene. It didn’t run, it stopped the Darkness and that’s why it died.)
Perhaps (and this is only just a theory, a gaaaame theory) the Traveler is testing the guardians by not speaking a lot. It knows the strongest of will won’t join the darkness so easily, and we will be stronger without weak-willed guardians. Only problem with this theory is that it’s almost like the Darkness’ philosophy, so I digress.

I can only imagine the traveler has Morgan Freeman's voice

The traveler in the sub quests takes Toland and the speakers dialogues, bits and pieces of ikoras and caydes. It uses words spoken by others to glee. It’s meaning. That is artful manipulation. The dark however...it takes a form we are familiar with. Ourselves, or more accurately a reflection of us. If the traveler is really more powerful than the dark..our ghost shouldn’t have been so easily possessed. If the traveler was so bright, why when the darkness showed itself..was there no reaction, like when the traveler woke because ghaul, the dark honed in. In light there is shadows cast, and in shadows...there is no escape.

I'd still like to side with the darkness just cause I like playing the bad guy in games and it'd just be cool to have dark powers
-
The reason the traveler doesn't speak is surely that Bill Nighy became too famous and Bungie can't afford his voice talent any more?? ;-)

<The Pyramid isn't deceiving us, it's flaunting its power. I will say that, in the context of Destiny, joining the Darkness is an unbelievably stupid move at the moment. This is precisely one reason why I don't like the idea of Dark Guardians. Don't get that phrase confused. I think we will get Dark abilities and use them in tandem with our Light. That's not a Dark Guardian, that's harmony and it's a smart move. A Dark Guardian in my eyes is someone who has given up Light entirely and would side with the Pyramid Armada. Toland scrapes by this criteria because he's actually kinda helpful and gives us some cool tips (Deathbringer). He's not an idiot, he's just kinda crazy. An army or even small group of Dark Guardians is a waste of potential. When we could've had moth people or ancient extraterrestrial humans from billions of years ago or gooey masses of undefined intelligence, instead that would be some lame ass mirror scenario that wouldn't even make sense time-wise depending on where or when you position the theory. Bit of a rant off one sentence of your post OP but I needed to expel my thoughts from the dark hole they crept from. If the Darkness came to us without the context of Destiny, then I'm all for joining it.>

Hold on, who spoke to us when we acquired our supers?? I'm specifically talking about those missions on IO with the trees!
-
Well the Traveler better start showing more visions if it wants us to stay loyal
-
Loyal to Calus. (If choices were actually a thing.)
-
he died of fall damage, he doesn't speak
-
Wow. Someone who makes sense.

Edited by Spenc: 10/18/2019 4:19:29 PMMaybe the speaker was conjured by the traveler similarly to how the darkness created a mirror of yourself to speak to us. Both take forms of something we will understand, in the case of the traveler the speaker, and the darkness us.
reached inside our Ghost and possessed it (which in my opinion is rather gay)
also that line is pure comedy

The traveler is like Jesus, and our ghost is the bible. We worship and are loyal, yet we are abandoned on a shitty planet where death is everywhere. The darkness is like the afterlife, clearly..

Because it's a giant jar of mayonnaise. It may be an instrument, but it doest mean it can talk.

Edited by Grays_KS27: 10/17/2019 6:22:41 PMEveryone’s always saying “Well if the Traveler’s awake now, why isn’t it telling us anything?” News flash, guys, the Traveler never spoke!
“Too many put their faith in the Traveler. I don't know what sort of answers people expect from a gigantic ball in the sky. It remains silent, as always.” https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/entries-67-68#book-the-black-armory-papers
It’s just a big ol’ golf ball in the sky! It’s a well-known fact that giant space golf balls can’t talk! And people who want to join the Darkness haven’t been paying any attention! The Darkness has flat out told us exactly what it wants many times:
“Those who do not exist cannot suffer and are of no account to any viable ethics. If the true path to goodness is the elimination of suffering, then only those who must exist can be allowed to exist.” https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/pleased-to-meet-you#book-unveiling
It’s been made explicitly clear: the Darkness wants to kill everything. When it calls itself our salvation, it means “you can’t suffer if you’re dead, so I’m totally saving you by murdering you lmao” The Darkness sucks, the Traveler sucks, both sides suck, we all suck!

I side with the darkness because I like being the bad guy
-
there was also an io mission where the light appeared to talk to us.
-
Well i just want to go full Itachi with a Titan Black Hammer of Sol and melt the world. What's wrong with that? XD
-
I don't know where I'm going. But my loyalties lie with the drifter.

Sadly the Ghost talking about Mars was Rasputin. The Ghost is a machine. It's been abducted by the Vex and overtaken by both Rasputin and now the Darkness. Not to mention nothing in the new lore motivates me to side with the genocidal Pyramid. It may have given us details on the origin of the universe and had a slight shift in motivation, but the end point is still the same.

I have to agree with the original post. It seems like the Traveler showed us where to look without telling us what to see. It wanted us to come to the correct conclusion on our own, using the visual and audio clues from the past: the glowing trees, words spoken by the Speaker, Zavala, Cayde, and even Toland. The Darkness tries to make us think what it wants us to think, going so far as possessing our Ghost and speaking to us through it and tell us half-truths to deceive us. Every good lie has a dash of the truth in it, and is so nebulous that discerning truth from fiction is difficult.

The Darkness is homo confirmed

The Traveler doesn’t speak to us because it simply does not care for us anymore. It’s done. It did it’s job killing Ghaul. It’s not caring about anything anymore. Pretty plain and simple. It’s done it’s job as the Gardener in creating life in us. Now it’s just waiting for the Winnower to come and separate the chaff from the grain she’s created.
