Like... what?
I preloaded a week ago. Steam told me "Preloaded - Unreleased", but Destiny 2 was sitting in my downloads. Did not bode well. I reached out to Bungie constantly, but got no answers. So I kept trying to update it everyday. Nothing.
I figured, it's either a Day 1 update or a download for Shadowkeep. People asked Bungie on Twitter about Steam info, but only gave cookie cutter CONSOLE replies. I hoped it would be good to go asap. I could only wait as it didn't let me hit the little arrow update button on Steam until it finally released.
Now here we are. Destiny 2 is "unpacking..." it keeps going from 1 hour to 2 hours for completion.
Bungie never communicated this. Bungie gave out VERY little info regarding the PC/Steam release.
Is this happening to anybody else?

Mine took 45 minutes, was on a hard drive (I only have a 256GB SSD so not enough for my entire steam library) but it's a 2016 barracuda which is pretty fast as far as standard HDD's go. I could see older hard drives taking an eternity.

When you Preload a game on steam all files are downloaded in to a folder named "depotcache" and are Encrypted to prevent data mining and piracy. what you are seeing is Steam Decrypting the game and copying to its usual/default game folder as of this post im 50% completed and 25 more minutes to go

1. Stop whining that they are unreliable. 2. Steam and Bungie has to do that to prevent any datamining, as a data miner myself I know what unpacking does. If you don’t then you really don’t know how coding works. Preloading is just a way to allocate the space in the drive and also fully encrypt it. Unpacking is the most tedious process to go through. When they said once you’re preloaded it’s green it means it’s live and unpacking has started. You really jump ship saying uh it doesn’t work or there’s an error (there are bound to be errors) but unpacking again is tedious for PC, console doesn’t deal with unpacking. Nothing to do with your system it’s truly the most tedious process. Mine just finished because of how much files were inside. Appreciate that Bungie is now on its own, Steam is just the seller not the brains. If you want to whine go ahead as a saying goes. You’re not going anywhere.

I have the same issue ! I am very disappointed with Bungie and Steam !
-
Mine gets stuck at exactly 77.4 GB no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall or how much space I clear from my hard drive. This is stupid. I know its most likely not a Bungie problem though so maybe redirect your anger to the guys over at Steam who set this thing up.

-
Yeah im in the same situation too, I wasn't aware of an unpacking part...
-
It's cause Bungie and Steam don't know how to do anything right
-
same here I preloaded days ago in just a few hours and now it says unpacking 1 week remaining ... I mean wtf I know I'm on 5400 HDD but it's a -blam!-ing bad joke
-
Same here.. multi hour unpacking? Geez Bungie... thats rough.
-
Hi there, Unpacking is a regular step for all Steam releases. Let it complete and once it finishes unpacking you should be set to begin playing.
-
Same here 44 minutes - 2 hours in oscillation but at 33% in 30 minutes so 90 -120 minutes? The first time it said 3 days. There is a lot of data and I have an HDD and no SDD (those are for operation only tasks because SDDs are not cheap). If you hit the day mark, hit ctl-alt-delete, sort by disk, and get rid of some Microsoft things. Your issue is now disk space. Make sure you have as much disk space available as possible for Steam.

What was the actual point of the pre load. Some neck beard is probably half way through the story by now
-
1-2 hours is lucky mines going between 12 hours and 1 day and I’m on an ssd
-
For me it straight up doesn't recognise that I pre-loaded it, and my only option is to install it, but it is taking up the place somewhere, and that's just ridiculous honestly.
-
Mine took like 8 mins too an SSD I'd say probably your hardware are you all using a HDD?
-
And yet streamers and influencers weirdly get in straight away. Not happy.
-
I mean let's not blame Bungie until we know its them. Steam is not perfect. They spoiled a Capcom surprise release for new characters for Street Fighter literal days before the biggest fighting game tournament in the world: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-08-03-valve-apologises-for-street-fighter-5-dlc-characters-steam-leak
-
I read something about a day 1 update but this is fa-king rediculous.
-
Same for me and even worse, having a rather old HDD it takes several days to unpack now. At the same time my disc drives workload is constantly at 50% minimum (Without any active process actually using that much). I have installed many games of similar or bigger data-size on that hard drive and never encountered anything like it. This unpacking issue doesn't make any sense at all. I will be waiting for a response from Bungie and hope they solve this. Apparently not only Moon is haunted but also Shadowkeeps release.

Edited by Golden: 10/1/2019 7:45:23 PMJesus 20 hours to unpack the DLCs? I really hope it's an issue on bungies sides Edit: mines saying launching Destiny 2 in an hour. Lucky me
