(page 65) At first Shadow thinks what she’s hearing must be some sort of gunshots, until she realizes the sound is emanating from where the Traveler touched. The light spreads outward from the center of the crater. Her amber eyes watch, stretched wide in awe. Shadow gasps in shock, the tidal wave of light washing over her and sending her tumbling backward. Her heart skips a beat. “Whatever you saw was for you, and you alone,” Ikora informs her. “The Traveler is speaking to you. Eyes up guardian.” A thrill of shock races through the hunter’s blood, running it cold. [i]Me? What could the traveler possibly have to say to someone like me?[/i] She didn’t have long to wonder. [i][b] “Devotion inspires bravery.”[/b][/i] Shadow’s ears throb at the echo of the voice in her head. She sucks air in slowly, shaking. The hunter looks around, though she knows she won’t see anything. [i]The traveler is speaking to me, just as it spoke to Variks.[/i] An image flashes into her mind unbidden— Shadow herself launching herself into battle in the name of her friend from the Reef. [i][b] “Bravery inspires sacrifice.”[/b][/i] She sees in her minds eye, her fellow guardians mocking her, losing the respect of the people she’d tried to protect. [i][b] “Sacrifice... leads to death.”[/b][/i] Another blast of light nearly knocks Shadow off her feet. And another. [i][b] “Humanity must have protectors. Will you stand with me?”[/b][/i] Shadow hears her own voice respond inside her head. “I will fight for humanity, and the eliksni. Who’s protecting them?” [i][b] “The light lives in all places, in all things. You can block it, even try to trap it. But the light will find its way.”[/b][/i] Hope surges through her chest, giving her newfound strength. Light arcs along her skin. Shadow blinks warm amber eyes filled with pain, yet glowing with a new understanding and weight off her shoulders. She’s not sure if she’s speaking to the traveler, or herself. “I can’t wait any longer...
