I was talking to some people on discord about shadowkeep and monetization and decided to post it here too. I'm not trying to stop others from buying shadowkeep, I'm just saying why I'm not getting it.
One thing I dont get is everyone saying "well it's free now, so its okay", but just because a game is free doesnt mean it doesnt have predatory or scummy monetization. Just look at those phone games that are free, but also heavily push you towards paying for stuff.
That is beside the point though.
So if you look at how bungie is planning to monetize Destiny 2, they have eververse, shadowkeep, seasons and the bungie store.
Eververse is simply a place for you to buy cosmetics. Very simple and commonly used in many games, both free and paid. They are also making it possible for you to buy the stuff there for bright dust, a "new" in game currency you earn from game play. My only real issue with this is that the value of bright dust is very inconsistent. For cool stuff it has a very low value, but for okay stuff it has a decent value. This tells me that bungie isn't looking at the value of a player's time when making the bright dust prices, but at how they can get people to instead spend real money since the prices are to high. They are also making it possible to see tess even in from orbit, this makes very little sense since she will be the only vender, to my knowledge, this is happening for. Also (and I know this is very conspiracy theory sounding) it feels like they are trying to drain us of as much of our bright dust as possible before the eververse change.
Shadowkeep, to me, makes little to no sense. They say that they are changing to a season model, but the first thing they do is make an expansion. Why have an expansion? They say they want an evolving world that is constantly changing and dynamic, but they are adding shadowkeep, a linear story that will be a part of the game until it ends. Why? I think it is one of two possibilities, either they want more money from players, and the only way to justify charging that much is by making an expansion, or they dont think that shadowkeep can stand on it's own as a piece of content. If it is the first option, I can kind of understand, I really dont like it but I get it. If it is the second one, it's a little sad. Like I feel that forsaken had a ton of stuff to do and explore, it stood on it's own two legs as a piece of content. I still havnt done EVERYTHING there is to do there. But with shadowkeep they feel they need to release both at once. This is either for money, or lack of meaningful content, either way it isn't good.
Now seasons are where I have the most issue. They are just a really big FOMO (fear of missing out) tactic to try and get people to get every season. If you don't get the premium track you cant get all this cool stuff for "free" (yes it is technically free but if you dont have time to earn it you will have to pay). If you dont get the season, you can have fun and tell stories that start with "you had to be there when...". And if, like me, you are hesitant and decide to wait, or have a job like my old one where I would go 6+ months at a time with no ability to play online games, you just can't play that content. I didn't get the last season pass until after season of the drifter came out, I was hesitant to get it because of the price and what I heard about the forges. After I got it, I went back and played the forges some. Turns out I kind of like it. It's not always the best thing in the game, but it sure beats reckoning. That wouldn't have been possible if the forges had gone away. I would have been left with just gambit prime and reckoning, fun.
Lastly the bungie store. I dont hate it, it's kind of cool. That's really it. It's cool you can unlock stuff, but I feel like the stuff is a little over priced, but that's just me.
And those are all my points. When you look ar each part by itself, it's not to bad, but when added togeather I don't like where they are going.
Unless they announce something big in the near future, I'm not getting Shadowkeep or Season of the Undying. Get it if you want, but I'm not.

This is being added after the original post. After talking to people in the replies, I take back what I said about having both a new season and expansion start at the same time. Having both allows there to be less of a content drought. I still think that staggering the releases would be better, but I don't think the reason is just greed or lack of content.

I am so tired of hearing about , you have to pay to play every season. This is no different than any other year in destiny. You buy the expansion and the dlc's, annual pass , or now the battle pass as everyone is calling it. If you don't buy the season pass, then you don't play that stuff. No different than any other year. Other than you can buy seasons individually, and you can actually still get gear and items, even if you don't buy the season. Yes they are going to take certain events away, who cares, how much of the old events do you play anyway. Oh and when bungie makes old events you have to play, you all -blam!- about being forced to play old content.
-
You know the most ironic part. If you have to buy ranks it will likely cost more than buying the season. In the wise words of Yoda. End well this will not!
-
D2 has run its course. Its best to just retire from the game.
-
One thing I dont get is everyone saying "well it's free now, so its okay",
That comment would be acceptable if Destiny would really go free2play. People are criticizing the monetization because basically Bungie is double-dipping with Shadowkeep. Cashing in on the paid expansions and seasons, and cashing in on egregious microtransactions because "muuh, free2play" on top of that. That's the shitty part, but honestly no surprise at this point.

So back in D1 they reworked tess and created eververse. But that was ok apparently because it was just emotes and people shouldn’t over react. Now with a playerbase that has dropped dramatically since then we have a battle pass coming featuring things like weapons, armour and an exotic That slippery slope from buying just emotes has taken us to here But but the battle pass is free!!!! Is it? Fortnite gives content updates but charges for battlepass Destiny is charging for content but giving free battlepass Looks kinda similar But but we had a battlepass with rise of iron in the form of a book! Hmmm nope you had a book you could work on at your own leisure that was more similar to triumphs in D2. Battlepass is season specific and will reset each season But but you still get the loot if you don’t buy it!!!! True but those that buy the premium are at an advantage over those that don’t therefore the term pay to win is fairly accurate Also take into account you can buy ranks at the end of each season to catch up and you have another way where pay to win comes in to it It will only get worse from here. As long they think they can get away with it they will do it. Is it far fetched to think they’ll charge a premium for strikes, pvp maps and modes, raids? Not really. This is a money desperate bungie with nobody keeping them on a leash
-
Just because the game becomes free doesn't mean I haven't paid 140 bucks so far.
-
If I buy something I dont expect it to be taken off me after three months and I have to buy it again.
-
Let’s cut the BS please: Bungie went free because they had no other choice. It’s an over 1 year old discussion. They also cannot charge anymore for the base game because no one is paying for it. So they turn a catastrophic situation, into a sales speech, but no one is fooled. I paid destiny 2 plus forsaken and this annual pass $39 a few months ago. Shadow is no different. Bungie isn’t free to play. It’s a triple subscription service, as not only do we have to pay for playing the current content, but then we have to pay to look ok, and then again pay to earn some weapons. As many players said it for years, the only one who could kill destiny was Bungie.

Edited by QuinnCupid: 9/2/2019 5:14:36 PMI may or may not get it but I'm not preordering it, I will see how good it is. And besides remnant from the ashes has all my attention atm. 😊

Everyoke who says this kinda bs buys what wver they say there not gonna buy. So you do no really cares though, you just look stupid
-
One thing I dont get is everyone saying "well it's free now,
Yeah. It's not "free" now. Shadowkeep costs $35/$60 with annual pass. D2 was free on PC and PS+ last year. We already bought D2/CoO/Warmind/Forsaken when it was released.

'ight 👌

I’ll reserve judgement until we know the exact prices of the season pass and other payed items. On the other hand, I really don’t care whether or not a game is pay to win, just as long as there a freedom to choose either path, and that the free path is fair. The players paying for stuff more often than not will never be as good as the players who grind for things, as they are just casuals and not real gamers. Plus, the payers will never have the enjoyment of finally earning that cool item.

Who cares if you dont get it, next.

whop cares it's 2019 money shouldn't be a problem

Bungie:But we some hungry twats, with no sugar daddy!

I just pre ordered it 👌🏻
-
Literally no one cares why you aren’t getting the expansion.
-
I pre ordered Shadowkeep and battle pass and I no care what people think
-
People just don’t get shadowkeep they post long drawn out messages on why they aren’t getting shadowkeep. Bro really ? You really doing this attention seeking while a hurricane is coming?
-
Yeah, D1 was better where the launched something like Shadowkeep and then gave us nothing for 12 months... do y'all remember the summers of D1? there was nothing between TK and RoI, and then nothing between RoI and D2 development costs money, 1000 people working on a game are all considering it charity

I shoot that defense down all the time. But I hear you on the FOMO tactic Bungie is doing. It wouldn’t be so bad if the rewards you get from a missed Season within the Battle Pass can ne obtainable in future Seasons. But Bungie hasn’t been clear on that yet.

We’ll see you in Shadowkeep.

Since New Light Owners still need to buy Shadowkeep/Annual Pass, Forsaken/Annual Pass, it isn’t Free to Play. It’s Free to Enter. If Destiny was Free to Play, it would be looking a lot like Warframe with every nook and cranny was 100% Free (with the exception of MTX which I Warframes only stream of Income.

I'm not getting it day one, but only because I don't see something that draws me in immediately. Really waiting on community feedback, especially for the end game.
