Why the Bond Brothers strike is the definition of a good destiny strike.

"Funny story: Remember that Centurion Oryx took right after you landed on the Dreadnaught, then the Centurion and the taken Ogre tried to stop you from killing the King? Heh... didn't work. So the Centurion's bond brothers are pretty angry they lost their commander. They're leading a team to blow up the Dreadnaught's core. Core goes... most of the system goes with it. You're going to make sure that doesn't happen." -Cayde 6 The Shield Brothers strike from Destiny 1 was by far one of my favorites. It had everything I expect a good strike to have. I will go into full detail on why I love it so much. So the Shield Brothers Strike starts with you trying to find two high ranking Cabal attempting to destroy the Dreadnought. While you might think it’s okay because who likes the Dreadnought anyway. To our knowledge destroying the Dreadnought would cause an explosion so large that half the system would go with it. So you run through the ship killing Cabal and taken. Then the Cabal are like RELEASE THE KRAKEN and a tank comes out and is all like PEW PEW MOTHER [Censored] So you destroy the tank and any remaining Cabal, then head to the bridge. Short version: The boys aren’t there. Long version: You watch taken and Cabal fight for 15 minutes to see who gets control of the bridge.
Taken won 7-2 better luck next time Brazil
Walk some more and you come across the Core. My first reaction was to attempt to steal the core and use if to level up the Equipment level on my lvl 30 Rogar in age of magic.
i couldn’t steal it :(
Then the first bother come out. And he’s like ALRIGHT STOP THROWING SHIT OR EVERYONE’S GOING HOME. The first brother uses melee attacks to decimate anything in his way. Your team’s titan was most likely pissing in his boots when he saw a Cabal with a bigger sword than his. After getting him to half health he runs away. Valus Tlu'urn: Why haven’t you killed the smelly humans yet? Valus Mau'ual: You don’t understand. They are all hunters. Valus Tlu'urn: You can’t do anything right can you? Valus Mau'ual: WOW! Just like my parents. I’m sorry I disappointed you DAD! Valus Tlu'urn: Fine, i’ll do it myself. The player has a good idea of the move set the boss has and they should be ready for round 2 right? WRONG! Valus Tlu'urn comes out instead! Valus Tlu'urn: You thought you would be fighting Valus Mau'ual did you? BUT IT WAS ME VALUS TLU’URN! REEEEEEEEE! Now the player must fight a new battle. Instead of keeping your distance, you must close the gap. The farther away you are, the worse the artillery will get. Again once he loses half his health he leaves too. The player is thinking: Alright now I know both move sets, the next one that comes out will be a piece of cake. BUT THEN THE -blam!-ING MUSIC KICKS IN AND BOTH OF THEM COME OUT! Valus Mau'ual: Launch the Artillery! Valus Tlu'urn: But Sir our troops! Valus Mau'ual: JUST DO IT! Artillery is raining from the sky, your team is in a panic. The Cabal are in a panic. The hive are frantically trying to get in and disarm the bomb. Explosions everywhere stuff dying everywhere all the while everyone was screaming HELP ME! Out of no where one of the brothers collapses with a mighty THUD! One of your teammates must’ve landed a stray sniper shot. The fight must be easier now right? THINK AGAIN! Instead of two big angry space turtles we now have ONE GLOWY RED EYED ENRAGED SPACE TURTLE, WITH A MORTAR AND A HUGE ASS MACE! Artillery everywhere death and destruction the whole ship is falling apart at this point oh god the artillery. Then BANG Valus Tlu'urn is dead. BUT WAIT THERES MORE! His body explodes! Killing your whole team because you couldn’t wait 2 seconds before grabbing the engrams he dropped. Loot wise it’s pretty good we got Actual strike specific loot mainly titans get the boss gauntlets and there’s also a scout rifle that people said was the best in the game. Nurf titans! Edit: Oops it’s in lore my bad.

  • Give us the primus, or we blow the ship. No matter how many times I heard that I’d always laugh.

    • God, being the first one to run up and crouch hug the first brother's crotch and empty shotgun blasts into it while he failed to punch you was hilarious. Of course that's probably the reason stomp mechanics are much more prevalent with all d2 bosses.

I hated that -blam!-ing strike. It was fun the first playthrough but holy hell was it annoying when it popped up in the strike queue with blackout

          • Eh the adds were a bit annoying with ZERO cover. But overall it was ok I guess. I think the sunless cell was the best strike.

          • Well there was that perfect spot for three people to stand where they couldn't damage you and you could just shoot them. Not Cover exactly but once you knew that spot, the final boss fight was just a sniperfest taking down two poopy bags of hitpoints.

            • U think its the best definition of a good strike. Then every strike should have a corner where the boss cant see u at all even when ur shooting at it.

I would hardly say that the Bond Brothers was the defacto strike in all of Destiny, and should be the gold standard for all Destiny 2 strikes. It seems like you just remember it fondly as a player and are falsely equating out a strike that you really liked to being the gold standard...but that's not really true because almost every strike in Destiny followed a strict formula: Step 1: Snappy dialogue to get you interested. Step 2: Mid-way gimmick encounter (boss fight or otherwise) that halted progression for a moment. Step 3: Big boss battle, often with another gimmicky mechanic or a neat setting Step 4: Witty dialogue at the end (likely from Cayde-6 since he was the only character that had any kind of development). Let's break a few of them down that fall into this category. Archon Priest: Step 1: Snappy dialogue talks about an Archon Priest escaping the Prison of Elders and needs to be recaptured or killed. Interest peaks. Step 2: Mid-way gimmick begins with door opening sequence, you gotta wait 3 rounds of multiple waves of fallen or taken enemies to advance. Step 3: Big boss battle, no gimmicky mechanic, but does have a really cool setting. You can either fight him as a Fallen Captain or as a Taken Captain summoning an endless army of Taken Centurions. Step 4: Witty ending dialogue. The Devil's Lair: Step 1: Snappy dialogue gets you interested in the fact that the Devil's house of Fallen have re-summoned another God servitor and it needs to be destroyed. If you do the Siva version, Shiro-6 tells you it's infected by Siva. Again, interest peaks. Step 2: Mid-way gimmick of fighting a giant spider tank. Siva'd or not, it's a spider tank, needs to be killed, halts progression. Step 3: Big boss battle. Spawns waves of adds every 25% of health if on normal Devil's Lair. If its Devil's Lair Siva edition, gains an elemental shield that matches the elements of the type of scorch cannon the designated captains drop, disable boss shield with cannons to progress. Adds still spawn every 25% of health. Gimmicky mechanic. Step 4: Shiro-6 tells you about dumb stuff with witty ending dialogue. Bond Brothers: Step 1: Cayde-6 tells you about the Bond Brothers. Since Cayde-6 is the only character people even remotely gave two shits about, you're almost interested specifically because Cayde-6 told you that you should be. Step 2: Mid-way progression halting gimmick of fighting a Siege Tank. Taken version has you fighting a Seige Tank that oddly enough only shoots at you and not at any of the Taken, and non taken version just has you fighting Cabal as normal. Step 3: Big boss battle. Gimmick is that you're fighting 2 bosses this time, each with their own set of abilities. Except not really. One stands there and shoots stuff at you, the other runs at you and slams you. Nothing special, get both down to half HP, then fight both at once, with loads of enemies, that's it. Step 4: Cayde-6 once again speaks and half the time you aren't even paying attention to what he says since you know it's Cayde-6 and anything he says is apparently gospel in this franchise. How about another strike that fits that double boss formula. The Tech Priest: Step 1: Witty dialogue from Cayde--I mean Shiro-6 about the Tech Priest in the Badla--I mean the Cosmodrome and how he's capturing Hive. Step 2: Mid way mechanic gimmick of finding these Siva Nodes and destroying them to open giant doors. Basically a scavenger hunt where all you're finding are stupid little nodes to shoot that waste your time. Halts progression almost entirely. Step 3: Big boss battle. Against the Tech Priest and his giant Ogre minion. Ogre is immune, of course, because if he wasn't he'd just get vandal blasted by Gjallarhorn in under a minute so to preserve another stupid gimmicky mechanic he's immortal and cannot die. The Ogre casually chases a random team mate around the arena while the boss shoots at you with his Ogre eye beam cannon. After Priest gets to half HP, Ogre becomes enraged, and now chases you quickly around the room and is much more aggro while the Priest is firing at you. Kill boss, Ogre dies. Whoopty doo. Step 4: Ending dialogue that Shiro says and is almost always ignored. These are just a few examples, but I can assure you that every strike in Destiny follows this formula. Destiny 2 strikes aren't perfect, but lets not pretend that Destiny strikes are the greatest things to ever exist in that game because they are gimmicky at best, and monotonous garbage at worst.

                • Yeah that was a great strike. One that should definitely return! Far too much effort went into those bosses to just forget them. I'd kill for Valus T'arc again (or however you spell his name). It's nowhere near as good or technical of a strike as Bond Brothers but the length of it is perfect. I quite enjoy the part where you have to take out the 3 generals or whatever and then there's either a tank or Taken Minotaur in the open area... And the next part is skippable which is pretty cool too and then boss. Ez. I remember slowing chipping away at those Generals during my very first Nightfall Strike attempt. That shit was fuuuun. Tbh it feels like a lot of the Strike bosses in Destiny 2 have been dumbed down. I suppose the Forsaken Strike bosses actually had semi-unique mechanics so they were pretty good.
