Alright I've had this idea in my head for a while now and wanted to get it out.
The story or final raid of D2 or possibly even D3 could be the guardians, having learned how to use powers of the Darkness along with the Light, end up facing a Light-based civilization that is super powerful and views us as tainted with Darkness so attack us. And we start losing, so eventually the Vanguard decides to send our Guardian/s back in time to fix it. Except we go really far back and get to experience the Golden Age right before the Darkness attacks, and then all the events leading up to D1, like Twilight Gap and the Great Disaster. There could be like whole patrol areas in Old Earth before the Tower was raised. Then finally we come back and we defeat the Light-based civilization and then we're done.

<I always had the idea of another civilization with the Light. The big part of this was trying to make them enemies naturally. I went from making them ravaged by the Deep but managing to survive, using the Light to get back on track and using it to remove all Dark from the universe. The next idea was a pure Light race that seeks to make everything Light, making the argument that Light is the natural progression of the universe due to life and the only way to save it from its heat death. Everything else is either a necessary sacrifice or an obstacle for this purpose. The problem with making another race that uses only Light is the mental stuff. Light is meant to help, to improve. It warps the natural law in order to benefit its wielders or those around it. To get the Light from the Traveler is to review your life and be devoted to helping others. While some people blur this line, like Uldren, I'm pretty sure a lot of them were genuinely helpful at the end of their first lives. Ghaul took the Light, the opposite of giving is taking. It's why his Light was corrupted despite still being Light. So if you're making a Light based race, things get extremely complicated if you want Light instead of corrupted Light.>

What’s the purpose of us going back in time?
