Mokele-mbembe is a creature or entity that lurks within the Congo River Basin. Described by locals as an elephant/dragon hybrid, Mokele-mbembe is said to be a something from prehistoric times, possibly a member of the sauropod family of dinosaurs, although it is said to be carnivorous rather than omnivorous. Origins of Mokele-mbembe can be traced back to 1909, when showman and zoologist Carl Hagenbeck wrote his book, “Beasts and Men.” In it, he brings mention of dinosaur fossils he had found in the Congo and rumors and legends of a mighty beast that stalks the waters of the Congo. But to this day, no hard and definitive proof has emerged to confirm Mokele-mbembe’s existence. However, that has yet to stop some from believing in its existence.
