Exactly, there was no endgame, which has nothing to do with solo or casual players.

Without endgame, there is nothing for anyone to do, solo, casual, hardcore or otherwise.

The reason there was no endgame was because solos and casuals complained about not being able to do everything in D1 so bungie made basically everything accessible to everyone
