My Review on SCRAP CF-717-91

So, Here’s my personal take on the Zero Hour’s Exotic Ship. First off, I am glad that they put something like this in. Having a little secret quest on the side and something like an exotic ship or sparrow is always a welcome addition to the game. That being said, there’s a lot going on with this ship and not a whole lot of it is welcome by the other players who have seen it thus far, understandably so if you’d like to view it on my Hunter’s file. So, let’s break it down. First off is the lost addition of Lore to it. When you complete the Normal run of Zero Hour and return to the Drifter in the Tower, he’ll say to you that he’s heard of your little stroll through the Old Tower and asks for you to bring something back if you ever return there. There’s also the Gambit logo that’s clearly portrayed on the side of the ship itself, but once all is said and done, that’s it. There’s nothing else to it. I’m mostly disappointed at the lost opportunity to go with these seeing how the ship isn’t SIVA or Fallen related in its design and there being a pretty clear link to it and Drifter in some manner of the sort. Next up is the big factor into why folks are irked over the ship, its overall design. It’s pretty large compared to most other ship designs, but it does have a bulky and rather mismatching design. The propulsion tanks that protrude from the front and the Thrusters located on the top of the ship take up a large part of the ship’s bulk and the way they just protrude out from the ship’s bodily axis just makes it super awkward to look at. You also have the issue of preset visual details that don’t change with shaders, namely the rusted and scratched up cover and the bar like details and bottom-most portion of the ship that is colored a worn-out mustard yellow hue. I get that they wanted to give a weathered look to the ship, but it just doesn’t work quite right with all of it. Honestly, Shadow Trespass has a more pleasing aesthetic to it since the parts that can change with the shader on it outweigh the broken up parts that are exclusive to that ship’s design. That works. This doesn’t. What bothers me is the reasoning behind choosing this particular design. The design team had a plethora of choices to go over, from a SIVA-infected D1 Ship design, which would make sense given where this all takes place, to even a House Devil’s take on the Death to Kells ship. This is a big reason why people are disappointed with the Ship Schematics questline and the SCRAP ship. All-in-all, this was simply another case where the folks at Bungie put this to paper and saw an opportunity that could really work, like Zero Hour and Outbreak Perfected, but when they went through with it something obviously unhinged and things became a mess in practice. It’s stuff like this that makes me question who’s job is it at Bungie to manage and overview things before release and why they aren’t doing a better job of checking beforehand. I’m hoping that the criticism that they’re receiving over this ship will point them in the right direction to what does and doesn’t work and that they try not to make another mistake like this...piece of SCRAP in the future.
