My friend just purchased the game and has been having trouble with the error code buffalo all morning, we think it has to either to with his battle.net not thinking he has the game because it doesn't show him logging in when the game starts or something with his Bungie account. Please help!

Has he tried logging out of the Battlenet launcher then logging back in? If that doesn’t work then try logging out of the launcher. Then shut down the launcher. In a web browser go to the Battlenet site and perform a change password. After the player has changed their password and verified they can log in to their account with the new password on the Blizzard site then open up the Battlenet launcher and log in with the new password. Now try launching D2 from within the Battlenet Launcher.
