One of my favorite things to is to look at real estate in my area and the places I visit. So I'm curious as to what kind of house you could buy for ~$500k US in your area? What's the best deal? What's the craziest house in your market at that price point? Use Zillow or Trulia if you don't know where to go. Cheers!

Edited by Fixit: 4/25/2019 10:15:41 PM500K USD = 750K NZD. Cheapest in the area are around 480-490K NZD, house & land packages. (3 bedroom.) Spent 700K on my house which is pretty much the same just bigger section and higher spec. Nothing in my area really goes over 1 mil not big enough sections for Houses that size.

There's a $515k house that's 4 bed, 3 bath, and 3,454 sq ft. There's also a $460k house that's 5 bed, 4 bath, and 2,920 sq ft. There's also a $525k house that's 4 bed, 4 bath, and 2,284 sq ft. Most houses in my home's area are estimated by Zillow to be worth $300-450k.

Ehh new builds maybe 2000sq feet with finished basement. Typically 3 bed 3 bath. These are generally in the brand new areas that often are pretty barren (no trees, grass, etc). I think if you’d want established( it would be a slightly older house, maybe mid 80s build and 1700-2100sq feet. Yard space seems to be a large factor in my city. Some of the older lots in desired neighbourhoods have 1/4 and half acres while new builds all have less than an 1/8 acre.

A -blam!-ing mansion. As long as it’s not directly on the waterfront, 500k US gets anything, it’s equivalent to like 700K Canadian.

Depends if you want newly built, detached or condo, how far from the subway etc. Our new 2 bedroom condo was 300K 5 years ago.

It can get you either a nice historical home or it can get you a slapped together new McMansion in my immediate area. Out in the country where we are looking, it can get you a hell of a lot more!

The question becomes "What does 400,000 get me" because there's a car and some tasteful modification involved if I'm earning said 500k on my own. So. I'd go with... 1700 sqft townhouse. 2 bed, 2 bath walking distance to the beach. Not much of a yard. Not the greatest neighborhood. But there's some nice, road legal driving nearby.
