This post is intended to be a method of communication between both those that like Fanfiction, and those that are inclined to dislike it. All that I ask is that you be respectful when conversing with one another in the comments by treating each other with respect. Arguments and insults do little in making a better outcome for everyone, so please keep this in mind when you speak on behalf of what has meaning to you.
Thank you.
With the latest TWAB, #Community and #Gallery will be disappearing, and all Destiny related fan fiction will now find its Bungie-supported home in #Lore. This shift will understandably be incredibly controversial due to the justified stances that people tend to hold in regards to this topic. Examples of stances include "I want a place to show off my writing" and "I only want to see Lore discussions in #Lore."
Due to the increasingly dwindling quantity of dedicated #tags on the Bungie forums, both of these inherently conflicting sides will now have to share the same space.
So what can you do about it?
The answer is dependant on which party you align with, so down below I will provide multiple solutions that will help both you and the community in the long term. A Tl;dr will also be at the bottom of this post.
Remember: No matter what you decide to do going forward, do not insult or harass others. This will only breed a level of Toxicity throughout #Lore, and result in a standstill where nothing positive for anyone is achieved.
Fanfiction Writers:
To help make the lives of those that don't want to see your posts/fanfiction easier in general, here is a list of simple things you can and should do:
- Add "(Fanfiction)" to the title of your post. This will signify the type of content your post contains in an easily noticeable manner. This will unfortunately increase the likelihood of down vote spam, but it is still a better alternative than accidentally frustrating someone else who was just looking for other types of content. At the end of the day it's just a number by the side of your post, and not a signification of worth.
- Add the "#Fanfiction" tag to your posts, for the same reasoning as above.
-If you wish to see Fanfiction out of #Lore, respectfully advocate in favor of a dedicated #Fanfiction on the Bungie Forums. If/until this happens, Fanfiction will remain in #Lore because there's no where else to go.
Non-Fanfiction Viewers:
- Do not engage with threads that have "(Fanfiction)" in the titles or are tagged as such. All forms of engagement is what keeps a post in trending. While not exactly pointless, know that Down voting does next to nothing in terms of causing change, due to it having almost no noticeable effects. It is also likely that Downvoting is counted as increase-trending engagement, yet this is still unconfirmed.
-You can Mute users to remove their posts from your view, but know that this will also have the side effects of never seeing any other form of content that that user happens to create, regardless of if it's Fanfiction or not.
-If you don't want to see fan fiction in #Lore at all, please respectfully advocate for the creation of a dedicated #Fanfiction tag in the Bungie Forums. No matter what you decide to do, Fanfiction will end up being posted regardless, and this is the only way to have it outside of #Lore in the long term. Otherwise, it will remain because there's no where else to go.
Tl;dr:
Fanfiction writers: Make your posts titled as Fanfiction to avoid confusion.
Uninterested in Fanfiction: Do not engage with posts labeled as fan fiction, mute users if necessary, and advocate for a dedicated #Fanfiction outside of #Lore.
For now, Fanfiction is an official part of #Lore moving forward. The reactions to this will be arduous, and I do not expect this post to change anything in terms of the distant storm, but I still hope that, no matter what you decide to do, you can be respectful in the way in which you support your stances. As of right now there's not much else to be done in light of this community shift.
Be kind, respectful, and treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.
Thank you for your time.
If there's anything you feel should be changed within this post, please feel free to let me know. Should it prove to be an improvement, it shall be done.
Or just post it in off topic. #Lore is no place for fan fiction.
-
Very well written and I agree on adding fan fiction to title and tags and please please leave out the hatred it helps no one and is really a black mark on those that harass and negatively react to others both of the pro fanfic and con fanfic side of things
-
Thank you for helping people find a middle ground. It really helps these forums remain less toxic
-
This is reasonable. As both an author and a lore enthusiast myself, I don't like having to post my work in #Lore, but now I have no choice. I hope you all will be patient with me and my fellow writers as we transition into this new space.
-
Let’s make sure the title goes a little something like this;
Fanfiction:
-
Exactly. All very simple, and really very effective.

<Spot on my guy>

I just don’t go to #lore anymore because of fanfic. People want to post their stuff on there, that’s fine, but I wish there could be a requirement to put that it is fanfic. I love the Lore in Destiny and it’s extremely frustrating when you’re having a conversation with someone about the Lore and they point out you’re wrong because it turns out it was fanfic.
-
If I were write fanfiction on #lore, I will put (fanfiction) or (fanfic). Thanks. 🙏

[Firestorm inbound.]

I would also recommend to space out fiction posts. Most people will only complain about a page flooded with fiction posts. We’ll have to see how many active writers we will end up having. Their number will determine if this is possible or not. I would say too keep it easy after the merger. Let people accept the new conditions first, ease into it. Other than that, very reasonable suggestions.

Destiny and my little pony friendship is magic crossover is way better in my opinion.
-
I might write a fanfiction myself. A rendition of the D2 universe without Cores being part of infusion.
-
If Fanfiction is being moved to LORE ten it is therefor cannon. Quick someone write a story about Cayde-6 still being alive somehow and eating Uldron Sov's Ghost!
-
Good post, Bio, I think it’s pretty reasonable.
-
Well said, it is a shame that gallery and other forums are going though. Hopefully Lore can get along with the new comers. ~Your local Shadow

*Salutes to Bio for Great post*
Great Post.
-
At least you didn't say anything about building a wall around fan-fic.
-
Nicely done
-
Cannon or not it relates to telling a story within destiny so should be placed in the lore section with clear markings as a fan fiction. For the record I hate fan fiction outside of comics like Watermelon.
-
I like what you have to say honestly but there should really be no reason we cant remove enhancement cores from infusion costs, nerf fusion rifles...and oh, eyes up, guardian.
-
Great post
-
you’re a good person

Sorry apprently people like you still don't know the difference between fanfic and making a backstory and lore for a characters that was created by someone else. Example we created out guardians not bungie. The only thing bungie did was make a not story that has going through a game collecting gear that feeds backstory and lore on characters that never make an appearance or have little impact on the game as a whole. Another example if people like osiris and so on were still alive we should have been sent on missions/story that has us trying to find them some they could deal with atheon and all the big baddies we took out. Also you expect me to believe that the thousands or so players that make three characters each all started in the same place and are going through the same story which makes no sense at all because that means they all have the same accomplishments and feats of strength and reslove. So I'm sorry what you consider fanfic is what people like me consider backstory and lore on created characters. Because said created characters have zero backstory and lore on them which in turn allows the creators which is us to make there story and lore. So stop trying to down play someone's creativity into what it's not.
