Now we are all familiar with the Vex designs. Vex milk in the center, one singular red eye, and laser rifles.
They terraform worlds (or consume them).
But something I’ve noticed after destroying so many vex, and re-watching old videos on Mercury, is how the Vex in our solar system don’t seem like they make any sense whatsoever. I mean that in a sense of conquest.
For time traveling robots they do not seem to put much empathisis on their main combat frames. Or are they built for combat in the first place?
I decided to do some digging and found these little gems related to the Vex. Mainly due to their old D1 lore tabs:
Cyclops: “But some evidence suggests that the Cyclops is in fact an enormous sensor or beacon, and that its weapons capabilities are secondary. What the Cyclops senses remains unknown, although its mind core is vast. It may play a role in the Vex networked intelligence, or in navigation across space and time.”
Minotaur: “Minotaurs pack brutal heat, but most of their processing power is devoted to the physics of building massive Vex complexes, suspected to extend through multiple dimensions.”
Hydra: “Despite its physical slowness, it is a rapid processor of the data fed to it by other Vex”
All of these things have one thing in common. Their combat roles are either secondary or thirdly. Never first priority. This means that all the vex frames we have seen and fought are construction beings. All of them geared towards a purpose of creating a future for the vex.
In that way, they’re similar to Halo’s Sentinels. Their only purpose is to maintain their installations and then protect them in case of a Flood Outbreak or a Hostile force seeking to destroy their installation.
But, why? Why use construction frames for combat on Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Nessus? What is there to gain from this? Especially when we know that some Vex frames exist and their end goals, thanks to the Books of Sorrow:
XXXIX Verse 4:9
Crota’s gate began to emit warrior Vex, huge and brassy. He leapt forward to fight them, but they blinked away. After they fled from Crota, they killed two thousand of Oryx’s Acolytes and ten thousand of his Thrall. Soon they had established themselves as powers in this world, by right of slaughter.
XL Verse 4:10
At this his worm began to chew on him, for he was bound to understand.
He called Savathûn to meet in the material world. She told him that the Vex worked tirelessly to understand everything, so that they could build a victory condition for every possible end state of the universe.
From all of this we can gather that War Vex exist, with the specific purpose of combat and conquering. But...if they’re not in our solar system....where are they?
Believe me when I say this, but I checked everywhere ingame and on Isthar Collective. Not a damn reference other than what we already got.
If I had to hazard a guess as to WHERE they are, I’d say they may be fighting a war on their own. Everything in Sol points to this system being less than a research outpost for the vex. A offsite lab (like the Vault of Glass, Infinite Forest, or the Pyramidion) to do research and send that research back to the main collective to aid them.
This would also explain why some Taken were trying to reach the collective on Io.
If the vex were winning a War against the Hive, then why not send them to a backwater system (not my insult, probably the Hive’s) and flank them form behind while also gathering Light for your armies?
Anyhoo, that’s just my theory on it. If you got something better, I’m all ears!
-
For a new kind of vex it would be cool if they had a shield in front of their normal weak spot...and you would have to shoot off the head to remove the shield.
-
Dude Sol is central to them. There is a possible reason they are Vex ships. Vault of Glass, their main hub. Infinite Forest, their only way to simulate paracausal entities and plot a future where they win (Dark Futures) Pyramidion, massive data storage network Multiple worlds mostly converted -Also a strange note. In the BoS the Hive that went into the Vex side of the gate lost power. So it’s possible Vex who gained power in the throneworld can’t travel in the Vex system without losing it. They might need to stay in the materialHence why they would need ships and require some form of paracausal power. Just spitballing that The plotting of survival is their main focus. We have all three primary functions of that job here in this system. The same system the final showdown is happening. The connection between Ghosts and the Vex is troubling. That the Vex think they share a common “home” is a serious ref flag. Also they were able to fight in the throneworld because that space gave them the Sword Logic power. They don’t have it in the material plane. So their warriors won’t be as effective here (unless the power carries over. In which case they would have to hold them in reserve to protect their central locations. Can’t risk it for normal slugouts) Nah, they got a front row seat to the two main powers it opposes fighting each other to the death. This is a perfect setup for them to manipulate us. They can’t fight us here like they could in the throneworld. So the next best step is brute force plotting a way out of the hole they are in. Which seems to be working since Curse tells us they have multiple ways to win.
-
That's a pretty good point. To be honest, with how efficiently they can transform planets and how little we've done to actually stop them, would explain why they don't care enough to fight us off. Especially since we basically helped the Vex when we destroyed Atheon, the only enemy of the Vex network that actually has the knowledge to possibly defeat them. Really, the worse thing we've done to the Vex was screw around with an extremely small number of their simulations. Considering how many thousands of millions of simulations they run, popping in and making a few unusable is not going to hinder their research.
-
If I were the Vex I would send a couple Axis Minds from the Sol Divisive over here to shake things up then if they succeeded in killing us no prob and if they didn’t kill us I’d send over some warrior vex.
-
I love the Vex for the same I like Calus. They are persistent and smart. But about the Vex, the vex seem to be killing major threats just fine, they kill guardians, hive, fallen and Cabal, I do want to see combat forms just as much as the rest of the community, but I don’t think the vex needs them. Their region of space is probably so big that they are waging war on al fronts and judging from the state of our small sol system they can wipe us out with ease. But they don’t because they have time on their side.

Edited by Bacon Wrapped: 12/31/2018 5:35:28 AMGood post. I always figured the Vex didn't bother with direct conquest, they did their thing indirectly through time manipulation. My guess is that conquest is more resource-expensive in most cases for the Vex.
-
If I could wager a guess, Vex base their weapons on the weaponry of others. That being said they studied the Sword Logic, so the next step would be to design a Combat Vex in such a way... Vex Worm, I'm talking about a Robotic Hive God.
-
Edited by CIKiller: 12/30/2018 1:42:14 AMSeeing as this is only one solar system in a Galaxy of over 400 billion, we are likely not enough of a threat to warrant the deployment of combat-focused frames. Sure, we are good at wrecking unfathomable numbers of Vex, but they always have more, and unless we start forcing losses on the Vex that it actually considers like several machine worlds(we'd have to travel to a few other stars to do this), we may never see combat-purpose Vex. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Panoptes was one of those combat Vex.
-
Actually, the Halo sentinels primary purpose was to quarantine flood outbreaks. There are sentinels meant for construction but the ones seen in game are basic combat units. We do however see heavy duty combat sentinels in Halo 2. The basic combat sentinels were only meant for minor Flood Outbreaks which is why they are small and weak. Their lasers are meant for cutting rotten flesh.
-
I believe that the Collective thinks that the frames currently sent will do or something (cough sound) The Darkness ended them and they have no more. But The Virgo Prohibition is to study the cabal I believe and they might have one or two types of combat frames I think.

So I actually found a leaked picture of what one of the war frames look like. right here We are all royally -blam!-ed...
-
They might be "hardwired" to have frames that construct or transmit data first with combat being a secondary function. Or all of the Vex bosses we've encountered so far might be their combat frames....or more devoted towards combat.
-
The vex have to go through a paywall before they can take over.
-
Tbh we need more lore based enemy variety. Vex is my most hated faction, they're boring to fight and feel too video-gamey. I love when enemy troops are used for worldbuilding. Fallen have tanks and servitors that serve as a realistic backup for them, and pikes are really cool. But Hive and the Vex are really lacking in content, they feel more like filler baddies than an actual faction. Also it doesn't help that the AI is so unimmersive. There's a lot to expand on the enemies we fight, kinda sad there's no rogue Cabal or extremely dangerous Vex models in the Prison of Elders for example.
-
Edited by H1vac: 12/30/2018 6:37:32 PMThese Vex are Bob the Builders. Their combat frames would destroy us. They’re minotaur/cyclops/hydra splash damage already kills us in a few shots. If they aren’t even meant for combat, I can’t imagine what their combat weapons are like.
-
If you notice the Vex have never actually instigated any aggression toward us. Their actions have always been in defence of their constructs or territories. They aren't here to fight. They are here to build.
-
Wow. Just wow.
-
Now I'm picturing how terrifying a combat Vex unit would be.
Minotaurs that shoot rockets and Cyclopes that fire Chaos Reach lasers...
*shudders*
-
They’re construction frames, which is why I’m terrified of seeing what combat ones are like...
-
That brief moment in CoO where you step into the Dark Future only to stumble into Panoptes and dozens of Vex warping in, trying to delete you from existence while you have to escape... ... I want more of that. I keep saying it, the Dark Future is neat, yet there's only an Adventure in it. The Vex are surprisingly passive, that's true. Thinking about the Heart of the Black Garden, I thought the Vex would be amongst the closest ally to the Darkness, but they're not. What did Ghost say in D1? They're so evil that they despise other evil and that's why they destroy anyone regardless their race and goals?
-
And let’s not assume here that the combat frames are the only step up from their mining/terraforming frames. I’m sure there’s even worse versions of Vex to go against. Man they are terrifying.
-
I think D3 will have combat frames.
-
What about prothrean?
-
Edited by Of 1000 teeth: 12/30/2018 8:27:01 AMNo you’re mostly right. The Vex were not always hostile and neither were their original frames. They “learned” how to fight and conquer from their encounter with the Hive in the ascendant realm and modified themselves accordingly. Everything the Vex are “now” is reflected on what Quria learned from the Sword Logic before it was taken and it influenced how they seek to perfect themselves. But the Vex can “remember” their original selves. Like the Vex harpy with a blue light. But I don’t know why the descendent Vex have yellow lights in the dark future.

Rapid teleporting Minotaurs are combat ready, I’d say
