It would be cool to be able to generally select whether you get a weapon or a piece of armor for completing a powerful gear vendor bounty or quest, like from the bounties/quests Petra gives that award powerful gear, the weekly powerful Gambit bounty, and the weekly Spider bounty. Not specifically an energy weapon, or helmet, for example, but just "weapon" or "armor."
Still would be RNG, but you'd definitely increase your chances of getting something you need to boost your level meaningfully when it's one type of gear or the other. This would especially help the guardians who find themselves getting 7 class items in a row, or 5 straight kinetic weapons, who then have to further depend on RNG to get prime engrams or exotics in the wild after they do all their other sources of powerful gear for the week.
It makes sense that world drops from random sources (daily/weekly challenges, prime engrams) are totally RNG in terms of what you get, but you should be able to be like "Hey NPC, I did this for you. Give me a chance at getting the armor piece I need, instead of a weapon this time."
I feel like it's one small change that could make a big difference for many guardians.
They did this in D1 with certain vendors. You could choose the type of reward package you received.
Thanks for reading!

I suggested the same thing and got panned for it. Good to see it's getting agreement and bumps here.

OMFG yes! If their "intelligent algorithm" for prime engram drops wasn't an epsilon semi-moron we wouldn't need this. If it worked as promised and always gave you something better than what you had, esp in the slot that is lowest, we wouldn't need this weapon or armor option. But since Bungie are incapable of keeping their prime engram promises in the usual way, giving us this option would at least give a chance of getting something for our grinding hours. It is such a kick in the nuts to invest so much time into a goal only to have it be thwarted again and again. I'm not asking for the grind to be easy, or for prime engram hand-outs. I just want my efforts to be rewarded. I want to feel excited when I am handing in a powerful gear quest instead of feeling apathetic dread that it is going to be the same under-powered kinetic weapon drop it usually is.

This is actually a good idea. Let us select the category, but not the item.

YES. The insane amount of energy weapons I’ve been getting since the forges opened is ridiculous. My last 5 powerful drops have been lower than the slot it’s in.

Sounds good to me.
