For those of you who don’t know, every enemy faction in Destiny is based on real life ancient civilizations, religions and historical figures.
Fallen = Pirates
Hive = Ancient Europe/Dark Age Mythology
Vex = Ancient Greece Mythology
Cabal = Roman Empire
That is why some units of each faction are made and designed to have some reflection of what they are based on.
Ex:
Hive Knights have Swords to reflect real Knight weaponry
Cabal Phalanxes have giant shields that reference a Roman tactic where a group of foot soldiers with shields huddle up to make a wall
Since the Darkness is coming soon, I’ve been wondering what they could be based on.
Personally, I’m hoping for Egyptian because the creatures and figures in that culture are more interesting.
I would love to see some sort of serpent creature
(more specifically, an Apep: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apep)
implemented into the game.
But, if you feel like some other mythological creature is more deserving, feel free to share.
Edit: Changed Cabal to Roman Empire from Holy Roman Empire because I have been corrected because I’m not a History person. Sorry for the inconvenience!

The darkness feels, and reads, more like a corruption than an actual race that Bungie would find a historical precedent to base it on. 2 reasons: A- way easier to say the Taken are corrupted agents of the darkness. B- Darkness as an actual race makes no sense against what I've read. - It's described in both D2 and D1 as an amorphous force that is inimicable to the light. Also, Asher Mir mentions several times that the Taken and the dreadnought emit
sterile neutrinos, axions, phaetons, and gravity waves
all things that are believed to be emitted by "Dark Matter" a kind of "real world darkness"; -it does not react with light in anyway; light is absorbed by it, and also is observed bending around it in space- the way a black holes event horizon bends the light of stars behind it. If Bungie has based the "Darkness" off of anything its not a culture or religion- its this massive unknown object in space that we can't see, detect or even prove it exists- all we know is it swallows light. my two cents
