The Heart of a God: *Putting a Spoiler over everything just to be friendly*
Something i feel many have brushed over with many theories; is that, through the Touch of Malice quest; part of Oryx still lives..and it's feeding.
"feeding" would seem an odd choice of wording when you consider that 'It's just a gun." Two things stand out: 1.) The perk; "Touch of Malice" uses a user's own life force in order to manifest a bullet- one that is more powerful at that. 2.) The perk; "Eye of the Storm" grants additional accuracy at the lose of one's life force. These two Perks stand-out to me as a deliberate lore decision.
The Worm God's gifted the proto-hive of fundament Worms; these Worms fed from conquest, and grew in strength and lust for more conversely. This is identical to the Touch of Malice perk, and the Eye of the Storm perk to an extent. How could this be? The Touch of Malice was not built with a Worm within it? no..something far worse embodies it's shell; Oryx, the Taken King. Weak, but growing all-powerful from our conquest. Feeding from our light, and the Light of the Guardians and enemies of the Darkness we fight. Through the Cycle of the Worm, Oryx's hunger will grow, as will his strength. Until one day, in which Oryx will return to his Throne World (What I believe to be the chaotic mess seen at the end of Forsaken), and restore his strength by killing all who inhabit, ending with Toland, the Shattered. Oryx will return, and with his return shall come a Vengeance fueled by defeat at the hands of the Light; he shall be chosen to lead the forces of darkness in it's final conquest on Sol. Well; that, or we'll have another Ghaul type again :P
