Bringing Sniping Back in Destiny 2! (To: Sandbox Team)

Sandbox Team. With the next few updates I think a large portion of the community would be really happy to see some positive changes for snipers in the crucible. In today's meta, the strength, range, ammo advantages, and overall usability of shotguns make them a clear choice as the superior weapon. Many of us want to branch out and use snipers but with how they work in the game today... it's just not realistic. - Flinch I think anyone who has attempted to snipe in the past few weeks will tell you that the flinch on snipers in unreasonably bad. The maps are already small but even when you are far enough away and well within "sniper" range, a handcannon shot from across the map can still send your reticle into the sky. I think most of us don't mind how powerful pulses are in the current meta but a sniper should be the better choice at longe ranges... and right now it's clearly not. Also, horizontal flinch is probably one of the most frustrating game mechanics and makes all snipers feel very flimsy. - Handling If you put Destiny 1 back into your console and pull out a sniper, you'll immediately notice that holding one feels much different. It doesn't have the sluggish feeling that most snipers in Destiny 2 (Note: on console) - Scopes Small maps in Destiny 2 is fun. It keeps the gameplay exciting knowing there are always enemies right around the corner. The fact that snipers are long scoped, high zoomed weapons makes them really tough to use in most situations. Most lanes are not more than a few hundred feet, so using a long range scope on these maps is about as useful as trying to use a telescope to read a book. It's just unnecessary and does more harm than good. - Aim Assist / Hitbox Size I truly believe that you can fix snipers even if you only touch ONE of these two things. If you want to argue that snipers shouldn't have aim assist and everyone should just get good that's fine but then we need to increase the size of the hitbox. Just play a game with a sniper or watch someone else do it. The amount of times that you will get a body shot that you thought was a headshot is far too often. Watching the clips back in slow motion, I really think the hitbox is just too small. That combined with the flinch means that you will lose most 1v1's where the other player is looking your general direction. - Damage Imagine you hear a super pop, you are aware of their location, manage to escape, gain some distance, turn around and make an incredible play to headshot them. To your dismay, sniping a sentinel / hammer / nova warp in the head only for them to notice you and then proceed to wipe the floor with you using their super is frankly just defeating. You did everything right, you made the right decisions, the skilled play, and still lost. Sniper headshots should kill supers. Enough said. In conclusion, there is currently not a single situation in the game today where a sniper is the better choice for the everyday player. Up close you will lose to shotguns, sidearms, fusions, etc. At range you will lose to pulses, scouts, and even handcannons. Note: Just because you can get kills with a sniper doesn't mean that it's the better option. Just look at the use rates for snipers. Almost non-existent. I hope you take this as genuine feedback from a long time supporter who loves the game. You've made a lot of strides in the past year and the snipers in the community are ready to make those legendary plays. We don't want easy mode, we want a chance... to make the legendary plays that made us fall in love with the game back in Destiny 1. Please upvote this and hopefully @dmg is reading this and will pass it along to the sandbox team. • I wish the maps were a bit bigger. A lot of the time I spawn in sight of enemies or I'm already getting shot at / super'd

  • I remember the Halo days where getting shot would completely descope you. Sniping is tougher than shotgunning, but making them as easy to use as a shotgun is pretty much impossible. The point of sniping is to remain passive from a distance. Tweaking them to be faster, deadlier, and to perform better at closer ranges not only defeats their purpose, it just means more people will be sniping you instead of shotgunning you. Sidenote, Supers shouldn't die from one shot of anything unless it's a counter super or a heavy weapon. WotW one shots. Fate Cries Foul doesn't. Supers are called super for a reason. Plus, you can always nail that second sniper shot. Fusion rifles are the only guns needing a buff imo (not telesto)

    • Noooooo sniping is fine, it takes skill and should. Only thing I would like to see is the power weapon snipers be a one shot body kill in pvp. Otherwise what’s the point.

      • Sniping is fine the way it is. There’s no reason you should be able to shoot someone with a headshot when they’re drilling you in the face with high caliber rounds. That happens enough already. We don’t need to go back to broken snipers that we had in D1 like the no land beyond that could headshot regardless of where your reticle was. Shoot first, and problem solved.

        • I don't know about PVP but I'm running a sniper in almost all my PVE load outs..... so easy and smooth to swap.. snipe...swap back to Primary. Never seemed this smooth in D1.

        • I actually think snipers are OK it's just that shotguns have a bit too much range. That and you inherently get more ammo for them due to the proximity of your kills. Fix either of those issues and you'll see snipers level back out.

        • That's funny, because every sniper I come across can dome be no problem while being smashed in the face with bullets. It's always the same with sniper users, they always want less flinch, and there is barely any flinch when using a sniper in Destiny 2. Nowhere near as much as Destiny 1, and people could dome you under fire then as well.

With respect, Destiny 2 PvP has much more serious issues and those need to be addressed first. I’m not going to list all the issues ... Down the line, yes - address flinch for sure.

I agree that sniper flinch is too excessive -- very low damage taps should not be able to move the sniper's crosshairs as much as they do now, while big hits from higher impact weapons are reasonable. The only other change I would suggest is to increase sniper base two ammo by +1 or +2 to compensate for the extra flinch. This would also reward more skill based precision sniper kills without changing generic shot gun slides.

        • Snipers still need a lot of adjustments I know cause I was a sniper from Crota - Rise of Iron and in D2 they don’t feel as good as they did in D1. Lots of Sway & Flinch

        • At the end of d1 I promised myself that I would stay a sniper, and while I have taken them off a few times, I still use snipers more than anything else in the crucible.

          • Snipers are in a good place. You just have to hit what you are aiming at and they are down. Also aim at the face not the neck or shoulder and it will count as a crit.

          • The only sniping Ive been able to do is in Gambit...otherwise its quick scope aim assist pure rng luck. Does look cool when it actually happens tho.

          • I think snipers are fine, the problem is the maps are too small for them to be effective. This was a problem even when all game modes were 4v4, but it’s even more of a problem now that 6v6 is back in quick play. With 12 people on maps that were designed for on maps that were designed with 8 people in mind, sniping is just not a practical option.

No. Snipers are perfectly fine as is in the crucible. More people use shotgun because they are more fun and more forgiving. Worried about flinch? Land your kill shot before you get shot at. Handling? I don't see any huge difference. Scopes? The only spot I agree, they need to bring back scope options. AA/Hitbox? You said it yourself, git gud. You still shouldn't have any problem getting headshots dropping the reticle down from above on a player. Damage? Not all sniper headshots killed supers in D1, either. Either way, if you have distance on any of the supers you mentioned, you should have no problem finishing them off with another shot or by whipping out your primary... IMO nothing should one shot a super, because it's super! (looking at you SS).

I snipe, though I have had insane luck with enhanced sniper perks and a good sniper. Check out my main for the details. While I think the ammo economy can use a buff (1 extra round in spawn and maybe 1 extra in pickup) I am having great success sniping on 75% of the maps. Body damage can also use a buff.

            • Snipers are deadly , I think u want the ole hardscope headshots while getting hammered with a pulse rifle. Sniping would significantly slow down the crucible, people would lane every game.

              • No. Sniping is one of the only things Destiny 2 Crucible got right. Sniping should take skill and that's what the current meta requires. The reason sniping seems so non-existent is because 95% of the players in this game have no skill. Sniping is fine just the way it is.

                • No. I snipe. And I never sniped in D1 because of how easy it was. Now it actually takes some skill and planning. Just like any other weapon type, it shouldn't be able to be GODLIKE on EVERY map. I enjoy sniping now, and I get a small rush of accomplishment whenever i pop a shot off into someone's skull. Sniping has been done right FINALLY. It's niche, but in the same way that sidearms and other weapons are more niche. The only thing I'd like is a pve buff in damage. That's it. Rapid fire frames and adaptive frames do nothing in pve, and high impact frames do something, but need a buff to pve as well.

In my opinion the problem is that there’s barely any good sniper lanes on maps or just too small for snipers and most are close quarters.... also my own personal issue is that I can’t find any good forsaken energy snipers that aren’t rapid fire frame, bungie needs to make more variety for energy snipers since all the good snipers in my opinion got put into kinetic

                • Snipers are great as is. No changes need to be made. They feel as good if not better than in D1. Now if a shotgunner had to have the skill of a sniper. That'd be much better! Shotguns need a reduction in range and the one shot toe killer needs to go away.
