Edited by Brian Barrows: 10/11/2018 10:51:37 PMHey man, my name is Brian Barrows. I am a vet of Iraq and Afghanistan, also I am a social worker and crisis mental health clinician. In Destiny, I am a titan that’s been dropping arch smashes since the beta. I started playing after I got home from Afghanistan in 2013. The “eyes up guardian” has resonated for a long time. It speaks to service members and as someone that struggled with PTSD, it touches a cord. If ever there is a way to link with you guys and give back, let me know. Have you considered doing some fund raising to donate with emblems or other cosmetics? You’ve done such things in the past, and I for one would be happy to participate. There is a lot of interplay with Plato’s Republic and the Guardian class if you folks want to take in some reading. Also, Sebastian Junger’s Tribe. Just want to throw a thank you out, as a Vet that came home in really rough shape, Destiny gave me a place to link up with people and use that energy is a better way.

-
Since we've shared his real life name why don't we link the obituary? Surely Bungie Agrees?
-
Thank You for posting this.
-
Post his Obituary so we can help his family, then we can talk suicide prevention. C'mon Bungie... let's help our Miltiary Vet out?
-
His family may not have consented to having their information disseminated. Please just accept that this was a nice gesture and leave it at that.
-
What? Someone must be able to link his obituary?
-
Feel bad for the family, not him.
-
Thanks for being a nice guy, Dmg. Ninjas usually say "fuk it" and move the topic to offtopic because "fuk you, go cry in another place". Cheers, mate.

Very much appreciate the information above. Hopefully it helps someone. Taking ones life is such a horrible decision for anyone to come too. I don't think many can understand the gravity of that choice, the finality of it. Too many are so flipant and ignorant to grasp the inner tug of war that is waged. The loss of this and every guardian be it suicide, accident, foul play or natural causes strikes a blow to the community and everyone they play with. To every brave soul in the community. Eyes up Guardians, keep a look out for those in need and when called, please, please do your part to help.

Edited by FdYAcsoyPKN83gLE: 10/10/2018 8:49:13 PMIts not a horrible decision to come up with, its a dumb decision to come up with.
-
There's nothing dumb about it. Sure it's an infinite answer to a finite problem, but when you've gone as low as you can go for long enough, your mind begins to poison you. Every other thought tells you how you're useless, a burden, a drain on resources. You begin to rationalize that if you're a net negative to your friends/family/society, maybe you should just end it so others don't have to deal with you. You see, your mind builds it's own logical case for your death because it believes things will never improve. If you're calling that stupid, you're lucky enough to have never experienced it, and I hope you never do.
-
its a sad decision to make.. dumb has nothing to do with it.

So very sorry for the loss of your friend, brother, partner, and community member. Also very sorry that some people enjoy being disrespectful while they hide behind the anonymity of a keyboard and monitor. Whether you knew Deriss in person or only through your shared love of Destiny and video games, he was a part of your lives and will certainly be missed. May he rest in peace and may his family and friends find comfort in their memories of him in better times. <3

Rest in peace.
