Toland has seemingly given up on the light and accepted the way of the sword logic, viewing it as a fact moreso than a belief. Despite this he still helps us where he can, he guided us to defeat Oryx, he leads us through the ascendant realm, he even "makes way for the light" in one of the ascendant challenges. As far as I can tell Toland wants The guardian to adopt the sword logic and use it to defeat the darkness but I'm not 100% on that. He frequently helps us and chastises us at the same time, I'm unsure what to make of it.

Toland is the Bendu. The one in the middle.

Think toland is all over the place to be honest. “And I should be your guide? Nono” *procedes to guide us through the ascendant realm for the next weeks*

To me, Toland is a good guy at the end of the day. To him, it's not as simple as light=good/Darkness=bad. I think he sees it as, in order to beat the enemies of the darkness, we must embrace some of the ways of the darkness to better understand our enemies. In doing so, you depart from some of the methods of the light. Toland is a good guy, but he has... unique ways... of guiding us.

Toland sees the truth yet that truth is something that we fear and try to avoid. If bungie would give us the option to do so in game, I'd adopt Sword Logic in an instant, we have already killed enough gods to compete with both Savathun, and Yul.
Though in my C0da, my guardian has a throne world and one that is very familiar, Mindlab, Rasputin...
Toland’s whole goal is to learn more about the Deep and how to combat it. Sucks that he actually thinks anyone can.
