<So some Forsaken lore tabs reveal quite a bit on the Drifter and the Darkness. Let's get into how this and how concept art can reveal so much more...
Once again, SPOILERS DUDERINOS
Let's start with the easy thing, the Drifter. I used to believe he was just another Mote of {Dark}, who lost the way of the Light... but then I read the Malfeasance lore tab.
It'll be a lot safer with you wearin' one of these. It's the culmination of a lot of things. Long time ago, I set out to find a replacement for a weapon called Thorn. This will never be that, but to me, it's better. We built it together.
And all of us, with this in hand? Even the Man with the Golden Gun should have pause. Maybe we can't out-shoot him. Maybe he can't be out-shot.
Combine this with a few shady things found in this lil' handybook and I think we have someone from the Shadows of Yor.

You're gonna have to scroll down a bit to see the shady shit he does, as the first story is the focus of the second half of this post. One example is thinking of re-imagining the Crucible with the creatures I'm going to describe below.
Either way, when you combine all of this together, it seems that he was a leader or at least a member, like I keep saying and repeating. Still, it's interesting... but it also means we probably won't meet any of the other Shadows, why?
THE DARKNESS
The first story in that link describes a group of shadow-like entities (with no head that can still stare?) with anti-Light fields.
This post by La Reconquista details the rest about these odd paranormal entities.

Also these things are capable of snuffing out Light just by being in close proximity and yes, they do sound similar to the things Cayde described and some interesting concept art. Walking shadows of sort. Not like the Taken that are corrupted, but a natural form of Dark entities.
I firmly believe this is the army that caused the Collapse along with the Deep itself. Wherever IT went, these things followed.
But something doesn't quite add up. Until now I believed the "Green" concept art was the true "5th" race... but it seems things have changed, only by the addition of another race.

So... would this mean TWO races in those wretched Tetrahedrons? In a way, I guess it makes sense. Those who turned to the Deep would become the beings who created those humanoid statues and a full on society of black and green while the Deep has its own natural-born entities. So D3 means we're -blam!-ed two ways and also part of my mega-theory was correct.
That being said, the Drifter has now become an interest of mine. The sole survivor of the first Guardians to encounter the Deep post-Collapse. Shame, if he is part of the Shadows of Yor then the others are dead.
Shame...
Thoughts?>
<EDIT: Drifter knows the Shadows of Yor, but isn't one. He's just a shady dude. The Shadows are probably still alive. The rest still applies.>

If you zoom in on the picture and look at the banners you see a mini Traveler at the center. The pattern on the banner is the same pattern the Traveler leaves on the ground in Io. If you look at the stone sculpture in the middle it's holding up the Traveler. These things worship the Traveler. The Traveler either has an evil side or another evil one exist.

What stuck out to me was the fact that they killed each other when they lost their Light. Freezing to death over and over on alien terrain knowing that you may or may not wake up was definitely part of it, but I couldn’t help but wonder if their exposure to the Darkness in a more pure form accelerated their descent into madness. And then to have the Drifter come back from that only seeming moderately crazy, I think the Darkness could have psychological effects on wielders of Light, possibly only temporary ones. I don’t know how many spinfoil hats are needed for this one, but there ya go.

Dredgen Vale ( Zyre Orsa) = The Drifter and The Man with the Golden Gun = Shin Malphur ...all the culminated lore so far points to those two
-
The Eldritch are coming!!!!!! ......first we must kill The Taken Queen. End Savathun and her tricks once and for all.

So the hive like things are darkness entites in away?

Okay, sorry to sort of break part of your theory, but I guess there's also good news? In some of the new "Collection" lore, Shin Malphur talks to Shaxx about the Drifter. He mentions how the Drifter is not a Shadow of Yor, but that he has worked with them before. Shin is planning on using the Drifter to draw out the Shadows. So, he isn't a Shadow, but that means the true Shadows aren't dead! Yay! I don't have links or sources for this, since I haven't read the cards myself and don't plan to till Forsaken, but snoop around on Reddit and you'll find some links. Also, Duderino? Have you watched RvB? Literally the only place I've ever heard that word.

I don’t believe he is a part of the Shadows of Yor. If I remember, a few months ago someone asked Bungie on Twitter if he was a member and I think one of the Devs shot that idea down. I could be wrong though

I wonder why those guys didn't just try using their abilities on those darkness entities. Or did their light suppression fields mean even a shot from a GG would be blocked? Regardless, I am surprised that the lore didn't contain even a sentence about the Drifter trying to kill the darkness entities.

What interests me the most, is why there are still entities of the deep in our solar system. Were they left behind willingly, are they the only ones to survive the travelers counterattack and the D2 cutscene ships are very late reinforcements? Why should the forces of the deep construct monoliths with cages for their own kind?
