I kid you not, we gamers are in fact oppressed

So recently my mom has been deciding to have video game free days and force my brother and I to hang outside with her. This is oppression. Now you may think it's just innocent family fun, but no. You haven't heard the full story. See, my mom doesn't understand video games and doesn't value them at all. She gets frustrated when my brother and I are in the middle of something in a game that's always online, so it's not like we can pause it to be at her beck and call. It's rude to leave other people working hard towards something and pretty much handing them a loss, I think the majority of you can understand this. So let's look at the checklist so far: my mom doesn't understand or see the importance or value me or my brother sees, because it inconveniences her sometimes she gets frustrated. Her beliefs about our gaming is very parallel to other kinds of oppression. For example, how the Europeans settlers treated and tried to eradicate Native American culture. They didn't understand or see any value in it, so they tried to get rid of it. I am sick of being oppressed and time is running out, I'm only half done my second character for the Solstice of Heroes and I'm not even halfway done the Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass. Sometimes I've woke up in the middle of the night to make progress in my games because I'm not allowed to during the day, but that affects how tired I am during the day. What should I do?????

  • I wasn’t allowed to play on weekdays. So I’d play on the weekend every chance I get. So I’d never get work done on the weekend. That had to change. I argued that if I could play more freely, I’d get more work done because I wouldn’t try to fit in all my free time for gaming, as I’d overall have more time. It worked. Debate. Get your mum to understand that this is your hobby. It’s not unhealthy, and if you prove you have the self-control to balance it in your life, you might be in luck.

  • parents usually dont know much about video games and thats fine. give it a generation or two then parents will react different towards videogames since theyve played themselves. but there might be other stuff their kids are into that they will not understand. its more or less a cycle that repeats itself. if i - as a gamer since more than 20 years now - was your parent id dropkick you out of the house for playing fortnite and using my amazon prime for subbing to ninja, ali a or any other fortnite streamer

    • Be there for your mom. Always. Literally. At every moment. You. And. Your. Brother. Always near her. Always offering to help with whatever it is she is doing. Always asking if she is okay or needs anything. Is she in the bathroom? Knock on the door and see if she is okay, needs toilet paper, more soap, etc. A second later, your brother knocks on the door and asks the same things. If she is going somewhere, make sure you ask if you can go too, to help her with anything she might need. Call her at work and ask how she is doing. If you hear your parents being intimate, knock o the door and worriedly ask if everything is okay because you heard some weird noises. After about a week of this, you and your brother being quiet playing video games will be the best thing she could ever imagine.

        • Simple solution move out, get a job, provide for yourself, then you will have freedom to do whatever you want and avoid being “oppressed”. Everything in life is a choice, but every choice has consequences. You want your freedom stop living off others. Until you are paying for yourself show your mom the respect she deserves, put down the controller, go outside and get some exercise. Oppressed! Jesus!!

          • Just do what somebody said before me: pester her constantly to the point that she’ll want you to play video games and leave her alone. Also my dad and stepmom tried the “video game free” days with me, it didn’t work lol.

                  • Grow up. Kids these days, I would get a chankla thrown at me if I didnt got off a video game, my parents never asked me to do things it was expected to be done. Still is, I work a 6 to 2 job, do my chores as soon as I get home from the gym and bam and dam ain't shit to be said when I've done my work. Do your work first, be done with it and your time will be yours. Time management skills, learned that shit in 4th grade when I started getting Cs and Ds instead of As and Bs. My old man gave me the belt and told me I earned my Xbox last year and if I wanted to keep enjoying it I would have to do better. That was the last time I was struck with the belt. Lesson learned son. I doubt the letter grade system exist, more likely its "Little Timmy tries his hardest but he just doesn't seem to get it. Maybe he has ADD, take him to the Dr. Either way we will give him a pass." Prime example of the most over/mis-diagnosed disease of this millennia. Pathetic, I spit in the dirt from which your balls drag. Parents don't instill discipline in their children. They have no drive and the future that is supposed to be driven by technology is only bogging down the minds of kids to have an instant reward mentality by clicking a damn button. Good luck trying to find a job outside of applying at McDonalds. Better yet I like it this way, because it just gives a youngin like myself an even better advantage. 22 and I'm sure by the time I'm 32 the people who are my current bosses will be working beneath me if not beside me still trying to vie for another position still.
If this is bait, well you no doubt got me rustled. Patience is not one of my better virtues, especially when it comes to stupidity.
• Unless this is a troll just wait until you move out or if you have a source of income try negotiating with your mother with somethings like “if I help pay the internet and electric bill can I game more?” It’s what I did and it worked out great for me.

                        • Seems like white people problems. When you move out, this will no longer be an issue. Patience = is your answer. Time will come when you will see your mother, once a week, once a month, once a year if you’re lucky.

                        • You are correct, however as long as you are a child living under your parents' roof, it's their rules. Your course of action should be to change your parents' views. Show them why video games are not only a valid medium of art, but also an excellent one. And I don't mean explain why the gameplay feels good. Do it properly - show them some breathtaking art, some awe inspiring water physics, a thought provoking narrative point. Find YouTube videos of people discussing the deep, rich lore of the Souls games, or the level of detail in an Elder Scrolls open world. Show them some cutscenes on YouTube. Also, try and do these things yourself. Wait for a moment when they are discussing their favourite philosophical narrative points from movies and books, and throw some Metal Gear at them, for example. Wait for them to talk about the most beautiful shots from a movie, and throw some Assasin's Creed their way. When they talk about the fantastic way a segment of a book has been written to implicitly suggest one thing or another, read them a lore entry from Dark Souls. You can convince people to change their minds, but you have to put the work in.
