The ghosts soul directive before having a guardian is to first find said guardian. To be a guardian you must:
1) be dead before resurrection (obviously)
2) use the light to protect the traveler/city (this has be completely ignored in some cases though)
No where does it say you must be human, shown by there being exo and awoken guardians.
The has forever been the question could a fallen or cabal or whatever become a guardian?
But this is not my question. My question is could animals become gardians?

To be a Guardian you must be blessed with power from the Traveler. The Light.

The Light lives in all things. Perhaps not a Guardian, but an animal could be blessed by the Traveler.

Edited by Jimothy: 7/27/2018 4:44:02 PMTechnically #1 isn’t true. It’s rare, but sometimes a ghost can choose a living individual to become a bearer of light. The current owner of the real last word (Shin Malphur I think) was born as a normal human and chosen by a ghost if I’m not wrong. To answer your question though; technically yes, they have the ability to be light-bearer (Gaul had the light temporarily) but they aren’t chosen by the Traveler. For some reason the Traveler seems to be exclusive to humanity.

In the lore, the fallen used to wield light and have the blessing of the traveler before oryx assaulted their world and the traveler fled to earth. It’s heavily implied that this isn’t the first time it’s done this either, so possibly hundreds of species have wielded light at some point.

few animals have self awarness. Pretty sure that's needed to do good(and bad) things.

Good point. Remember how lord Saladin has his wolf posse with him. Wolves usually run from people so is it really just a coincidence that he is constantly trailed by wolves. Maybe but still... P.S. I hope you are listening Bungie

I imagine that humanoids will only ever be guardians for now due to game restrictions. Now, all that really changes (as we know) is the sex and the head design of our character. By adding another race, like Fallen with extra limbs, would mess up a lot of gear aesthetic OR simply be too much work, though it’s certainly a cool concept. As for pets, trailed by wolves and such: it doesn’t seem to really fit. Maybe if we were decking out our ships interiors, but general play, not so much.

we haven't seen it happen but I don't see why not. maybe a ghost will take a big risk one day and we'll find out.
