“Angel!” Logan shouted as he caught her. He immediately began dragging her into the shelter of people, abandoning his defensive position. “What were you thinking?” he asked while applying pressure to the entry wound.
Angel's eyes welled with tears and her breathing became choppy. Her body convulsed violently as the excruciating heat of the round diffused through her muscles. “I was doing my job… Protecting... you.” Logan began tearing up too. “Now do yours.”
“Captain!” a voice declared. Logan looked up briefly at the skiff deploying more troops. He looked back down at the titaness and stroked her head with his free hand. Several people swarmed around them, hoping to help if they could.
“There are more people to worry about than me,” Angel said before drifting off.
Logan clenched his eyes tightly and inhaled deeply. He picked up Angel's auto rifle while climbing to his feet and took his own baton. He stormed back to the front lines, gunning down many dregs and vandals. When the magazine ran empty, he threw down the gun and whacked a wretch with his staff and cracked its skull. He immediately gained the attention of the captain wielding two shock blades.
The warlock flicked his staff back to full length and cringed as he gripped part of it with his bad hand. The captain swung both swords from its right, but Logan rotated his staff to deflect the attack. He kicked the captain back, then struck its left ribs. The Fallen barked, then charged back. Logan deflected its downward strike, but the impact was enough to push him to the ground. With the Guardian pinned, the captain reached for a dagger with its lower arm, but a bullet flew through its wrist, rendering its hand useless.
The captain looked up at the person that shot him, raising its arms to protect its head from the following bullets despite that its shield was already doing that. Logan rolled clear of the captain and whacked its jaw. The Eliksni dropped to all six, but pushed itself back up. Logan spun his staff around, building up momentum then hit the captain again, this time breaking its jaw entirely. Ether began leaking from its mask, causing it to panic. It ran for Logan in a last ditch effort, but the warlock forced the staff into its gut dropping it to its knees. The warlock finished the creature off with a powerful roundhouse kick to its temple.
The remaining Fallen looked to their dead, or unconscious, leader, then looked back to the mass of humans. One vandal screamed and they all raised their guns back up. The vandals in the back began dropping one by one. Aurora lunged from one Fallen to the next, slicing them nearly in half with her sword. She stuck a dreg with its it's own arc grenade then pushed it into a crowd before the explosive detonated. What few survivors remained climbed back into their skiffs and set course for the ketch.
“Nice fighting,” the huntress said while sliding her sword back into its sheath.
“Not now,” Logan declared as he rushed back to Angel. The crowd of people parted ways so he had a direct path. He knelt down by her body, but a man holding her wrist shook his head. He, along with the help of a doctor, was able to remove the wire but it wasn't enough to guarantee her survival. “No. No, no, no,” Logan declared as he bowed his head on her hand.
Merlin and Alice hovered over them as the warlock cried. “I'm sorry, Logan,” Alice said, crying too.
“Hey, I got somethin’ for you to see,” a feminine voice said. “Bring the woman.” Logan looked up to see a woman wrapped in a poncho, carrying a large sniper rifle. Through his grief, he missed the arrival of a fleet of ships that the refugees were boarding. The rose-red man carefully picked up Angel's body and carried her to the ship. Once everyone was boarded, they ascended to the sky and vanished in the clouds.
