Journey To DarkSpire Part 12: Eater of Souls

“The Reapening is a phenomenon, appearing to be preformed once a decade, usually at twilight. It is signaled by a blood-red sun. Once the moon is high during that day, the great dragons Zhul-Gamma and Alphos awaken and go out to feast on destruction. This seems to be some sort of behavioral stimulus, most likely caused by extreme hunger. This event is known as The Reapening, named so because of the many deaths that occur during its one month period. During The Reapening, hell arises throughout all of DarkSpire by the dragons. These dragons satisfy their need for destruction by destroying life and towns. Unfortunately, after attacks from the other great dragons, the population of DarkSpire has been at an all-time low, especially with the rise of Draksos. Should the Reapening occur at this time, I fear that Alphos and Zhul-Gamma might have to look for a new food source. DarkSpire will be drained of all life, and they will find some way to get to a new food source.” - Anonymous, found from a journal in Texas Jedi’s Bar, titled, “A Wise Man’s Observations On The Great Dragon Cataclysm”. • Artemis stared at Deatheater through watery eyes. She kept her gaze focused on his dark red eyes, his gleaming white fangs, and his gruesome smile... “You’ve asked for death... Now you will be given death...” Says the corrupted Reaper. Artemis tried to ignore the battle raging behind her. She tried to blot out the roars of Alphos and the screams of her teammates. She needed to focus. Without warning, she shot an explosive arrow at Deatheater. The Reaper gracefully spun to his side, the arrow flying past him and digging into a rock. Deatheater dashed at Artemis and the two locked their weapons. Artemis held her bow up, trying to hold back Deatheater’s scythe as the reaper pushed harder and harder. Artemis grabbed a blood arrow from her side and stabbed it into the Reaper’s chest, staggering him as blood flowed from his chest. He took the chance to swing his scythe at Artemis, only to be parried and thrown to the ground. Artemis stood above him and quickly shot a blood arrow, which had dug into his shoulder. Blood spurted out like a fountain as the arrow met his shoulder. He winced in pain, but quickly got up with a flip. Deatheater stared at Artemis with rage... “You are a worthy opponent... which is why I’ve brought an ally...” Suddenly Diana was thrown to the ground, next to Artemis. The archer looked at the medic, zapped with lightning and writhing with pain. Artemis slowly turned around to see the chaos that ensued behind her. MagicSpaceKitty stood inside Diana’s golden dome. She bore red eyes, and dark skin, as if ash was poured over her. Her purple dress was in tatters, but the torn parts seemed to float like wisps... “Great.... two more trophies for my wall...” She says with sadness in her voice... “I’ll really regret doing this...” she adds as she fires an explosive shot at the Arcane Strategist. MagicSpaceKitty caught the arrow in Midair. The arrow beeped for a second before she threw it back at Artemis. Artemis stood there in horror as the arrow flew back towards her. She prepared for immense pain. She closed her eyes. A clang could be heard. Artemis opened her eyes to see an armored figure in front of her, holding up a shield. It stood like a statue until the arrow exploded. The figure looked back at Artemis, with a smile and a nod. Artemis sighed in relief as ImmaDrizzit spoke... “I’ll help you with MagicSpaceKitty. Cell’s got Deatheater handled.” Artemis looked behind her to see Cell and Deatheater clashing blades, locked in battle. With each hit they let out small remarks. Artemis looked at Deatheater worriedly before she headed for the Arcane Strategist. ImmaDrizzit was right behind her, holding his sword. MagicSpaceKitty greeted the duo with a burst of Lightning. It grazed Artemis a bit, but she was flung to the side by ImmaDrizzit. The Paladin charges at SpaceKitty, swinging his sword across her chest. A huge gash could be seen, and red fluid spurted out of the wound... “Don’t hurt her too much! We’re trying to make them snap out of Alphos’ control!” Yells Artemis. ImmaDrizzit continues to slash at SpaceKitty, blood flying everywhere with every swing. ImmaDrizzit laughed valiantly as SpaceKitty was thrown to the ground, covered in blood splatters and gasping for air. A whine could be heard. Then the pattering of small paws. ImmaDrizzit looked under him to see Scott next to his owner, whining. ImmaDrizzit slowly lowered his sword. SpaceKitty, who had lost her dark skin and red eyes, was writhing in pain... “Well... That was easy...” says Artemis, standing next to SpaceKitty, looking down at her. •

  • Deatheater was wounded from the battle with Cell-3, but he was far from dead. The robot in front of him had blades emerging out of both his hands, holding a predatory stance as he charged one of his blades with green electricity... “I feel like we’ve done this twice before...” Says Cell-3, taunting Deatheater. The reaper growled as he clashed blades with the robot. Cell-3 parried him and bursted towards him, punching him. Deatheater was sent flying into a rock, collapsing as the impact sent pain flooding all over his back. Cell-3 walked over to the Reaper, grabbed him by the throat, and threw him up in the air. As the Reaper flew up, Cell-3 flew with him, his thrusters filled with green energy. As the Reaper began to stop at a tremendous height, Cell-3 spins once in the air and jabs a blade into Deatheater’s chest. The Reaper grunted as he was held in the air for a few seconds. Steam was released out of Cell-3’s blade as it was shot out of his arm, sending the Reaper flying to the ground like a bullet, with the blade still in his chest. He crashed into the ground, panting. Cell-3 descended to the ground, spinning a pistol in his other hand. He slowly loaded one bullet into the gun, and he aimed the barrel at the Reaper... “Look Deatheater... I’m Sorry...” says Cell-3 as he pulls the trigger. Instead, sparks erupted in front of Cell-3 and the robot felt pain in its chest. Deatheater held his scythe in front of him. He was able to deflect the bullet. The reaper followed up with a swipe of his scythe, and then another as a beam of moonlight crashed into the robot. Cell-3 was thrown to the ground, on his knees. Deatheater walked in front of the robot, holding the scythe at his neck. He drew the scythe back, and Cell-3’s lights slowly shut down as the Reaper prepared to end it. The Reaper could feel a burning along its back. It turned around to see Foofer, aiming a beam of cursed fire at Deatheater. The Reaper shook off the green flames as he threw his scythe at the Dragon Bender. It pierced his chest as it flew into Foofer, and a beam of Moonlight burned his leg as he fell to the ground. Foofer cries in pain as Deatheater lets out a grim laugh. Foofer’s hand startes to fill with a blue wispy substance as Deatheater’s scythe flies back towards him. The dragonbender was on the ground, closing his eyes and concentrating. The Reaper caught his scythe as it flew towards him like a boomerang and looked at Cell-3 once again. Foofer winced as blood poured out of his chest, but he kept his gaze on Deatheater as he thrust his hands towards him, now completely filled with blue energy. Deatheater drops his scythe, gripping his forehead as he winces in pain... “This should get that nasty ass dragon out of his head...” says Foofer through short breaths. Deatheater falls unconscious, in front of the robot, leaving Cell-3 confused. The robot slowly got up only to see Foofer on the ground far ahead of him, on the verge of death. Cell-3 runs up to the Dragon Bender and kneels next to him... “Foofer! You’re hurt!” Says the robot as he puts his hand on Foofer’s chest. “Yep. And so is our medic. There’s no hope for me now. I’ve repelled Alphos from Deatheater’s mind... for now. My time is done... I wish... I wish you good luck-“ Foofer gasps heavily as blood leaves his body, forming a puddle around him. He took one last breath before giving into death. Cell-3 grasps Foofer’s shoulders, shaking his now lifeless body. After a few seconds, the robot gets up, shrouded in disbelief, and he looks at Foofer for a few seconds, before turning to deatheater, who lies unconscious behind him... “Foofer’s done me a great favor...” Cell looks to his right to see Artemis, looking down at Foofer... “I won’t forget him...” She adds as she walks away, towards Alphos and the rest of the team... Hammerfist phases next to Cell-3, his body covered in bruises and wounds... “Hell of a fight over there. Alphos is tough, and we’ve barely done any damage. We wounded it’s chest though, however it wounded many more of us...” Says the Phasewalker in a fierce tone as he wipes a drop of blood off of his face... “Maybe Zen can help us. He seems to have the power to control dragons, similar to Foofer. Which reminds me... where is Foofer?” He adds as he looks at Cell with curiosity. Cell-3 points at a lifeless body, shrouded in blood. Hammerfist looks at Foofer with horror... “Aw... shit... it can’t be....” says the Phasewalker with a look of horror painted on his face. Cell-3 slowly nods, and he walks towards Diana’s golden bubble, where the medic lay unconscious, her chest singed from SpaceKitty’s lightning. ImmaDrizzit stood over her, helping her up, and SpaceKitty was huddled up in a corner, her eyes filled with fear. Hammerfist picked up Foofer’s body and dragged it towards the bubble, setting the Dragon Bender down near ImmaDrizzit... “Alphos doesn’t seem to be retreating...” says ImmaDrizzit as he looks at Cell-3. The paladin clenched his chest, trying to stop blood from a recent wound. “Well then...” says Cell in a sudden change of tone, a very merciless and robotic tone... “Initiating termination protocol. Stand back. Safety measures offline. This’ll get messy.”
