"City scholars and historians say this was originally a Russian bomber graveyard from a war that took place hundreds and hundreds of years ago called the Cold War." Ghost said, "When the Traveler arrived, humanity used this cosmodrome as the place where they would build and launch their colony ships."
"Okay, enough with the history lesson, Ghost." Avesk cut in. "We have a job to do, and I'd like to finish it sometime this week. According to the Vanguard, there has been an increased amount of Fallen activity near the Forgotten Shore. That's pretty far from here, but I had us land here so you two can link your sparrows to the transmat grid. The link is in that shed over there. Your Ghost will know what to do. Let me know when you're ready to travel."
Validus and Cosmo walked over to the shed. Their Ghosts appeared out of thin air and immediately began scanning the computer that was there.
"Encoding superposed states. Entangling ket vectors and... we're linked." Ghost mumbled itself as it worked. Once the Ghosts had finished their task, Validus and Cosmo returned to Avesk.
"Alright," he said, "if you want to get your Sparrow, we can be in the Forgotten Shore in seconds." The groups summoned their Sparrows and sped off towards the Forgotten Shore.
They zoomed over creeks, past caves, and through canyons until at last, they reached their destination. As the canyon opened up, the group noticed rusty ships stranded on the land; the water had receded far away a long time ago.
"Okay, I'm getting Fallen signals from here," Avesk pointed to a large ship that was broken in half. "..and here." He pointed to a worn down building up on a large hill. "You two secure the ship, and I'll go get the refueling station." Without a second to waste, Avesk sped away on his sparrow. The other two cautiously entered the ship and eliminated all of the Fallen on board.
"I think the signal is coming from here." Cosmo said. The alien machinery hummed quietly as the two approached it. Cosmo held out his hand and his Ghost alighted upon it. "I'll see what I can do," the Ghost said as it flew up to the machine and began scanning it. A moment later ballet music and quiet Russian began spewing from the machine's speakers. "It's just a signal amplifier." Cosmo's Ghost said.
"Send the signal to the team leader." Cosmo commanded.
Far up the hill, in the ruined building, Avesk's Ghost had just finished scanning its own machine. "Message from the others," His Ghost spoke. "It's the signal from their device."
"And?" Avesk prompted.
"It's the same signal as the one I just pulled out of that machine. It's old, and definitely not Fallen. I'm not sure what it is, but I've got a fix on its source. Skywatch, Terrestrial Complex."
Avesk spoke over the comms. "You two got all that?" He asked.
Cosmo's voice sounded from the other end. "Yep. We'll meet you there." He paused. "Um, where is the Terrestrial Complex exactly?"
Avesk chucked. "You noobs act like you know everything. Just be patient and maybe you'll learn a thing or two."
He flew back down the hill on his sparrow and reached the others, who were both already mounted.
"Follow me," he said, and took off, up another hill towards the massive structure at the top. The group entered the building through a half-collapsed parking garage. They when their path was blocked by rubble, they dismounted and continued in on foot. They headed down a few corridors and climbed a few sets of stairs before they reached the mouth of the room. Before they entered, Avesk gave a little pep talk. "I'm not sure what we're going to find in there, so be ready for anything."
He stepped out into the room to see the sign of several Fallen grouped around on the edge of the room. "The Fallen are tapped into something in the back of the room." Avesk stated. The Fallen heard his voice and turned to see it's speaker. A Fallen Captain bellowed and several transparent and blurred objects dropped from the ceiling. "Stealth Vandals." Avesk said. "Be careful, they're very proficient with their shock blades." The team retreated to the doorway and fought that Fallen. The Vandals lunged with their blades, and as they did, their cloaking deactivated. Seeing his target, Validus unleashed an astounding punch, sending the Vandal against one of the stone pillars that littered the room. It fell the the ground with a thud, and it did not rise again. Avesk deflected a swing from a Vandal with his forearm and with his other hand used his knife to open the Vandal's throat. White gas raced out from the rupture and the Vandal went down. Cosmo kept two Vandals at bay with his rifle, but he was unprepared when a still invisible Vandal dropped down behind him. It reared back, and plunged it's two blades into Cosmo's back. He let loose a startled cry, before he dropped to the ground, dead.
Validus turned, his eyes wide with horror. The Fallen withdrew its blades and bellowed a victorious cry. Validus backed away from the fight and examine Cosmo to see if he was still alive. Avesk kept fighting. He had faced this before, and knew that he had to keep his cool if he wanted to walk away from the encounter. He pulled his knife from his sheath, and with a flash of electricity and light, zipped across the room, alight with the fury of lightning. Every lunge from his elongated glowing knife that made contact with an enemy discharged a jolt of electricity, vaporizing the Fallen into clouds of energy. He moved swiftly around the room, clearing it of all Fallen. As he turned to face the last living Fallen in the room, his knife shrank back to it's normal size and shape, and the lightning crackling around Avesk's body faded. The Captain screamed in rage and fear and fired it weapon incredibly fast. Two shots from Avesk's Hand Cannon destroyed the Arc shield protecting the Captain from harm. He threw an expertly placed knife shot and listened to the satisfying thunk the knife made as it found its mark. He nodded, satisfied, and returned to Validus and Cosmo. Cut wires and circuitry crackled and snapped from the two smoking holes in Cosmo's body.
"Ghost, stand by for resurrection." Avesk spoke as he approached the two Guardians. A moment later, Cosmo's Ghost materialized and briefly hovered above Cosmo's body before breaking into several smaller parts loosely held together by a sphere of energy. Avesk concentrated and gave a bit of his Light to the Ghost. A moment later the Ghost flashed brightly. When the flash dissipated, Cosmo was standing on his feet, alive and well again. Validus stared wordlessly at the amazing sight. Avesk picked Cosmo's rifle off the ground and handed it to him. "You didn't really think you could get away from the mission by dying, did you?" Cosmo said nothing, but gripped the weapon tightly. "Come on," Avesk said, "Let's see what the Fallen were up to here."
