“Do you have any plans this evening?” Kendrick asked one of the volunteer nurses cheekily. The woman grinned, but shook her head disapprovingly nonetheless.
“Kendrick, you and Lafayette help me round everyone up,” Blake ordered as he stormed by.
“Excuse me?” Kendrick asked as he spun around. “When did I turn into your errand boy?”
“What--I’m not making you my errand boy, we need to gather everyone so we can prepare for… whatever might happen in the next hour.”
“There's a thing called asking. You should attempt it on your down time,” Kendrick stated.
“Is this really what you want to discuss at the moment?” Blake asked.
“No, what I want is that girl's number. But you took this horse out of the stall, let's see where it takes us.”
“I don't believe I did,” Blake rebuked.
“Oh, but this is what you want to discuss?…”
Blake rolled his eyes and huffed. “All right,” he caved as he walked over to Kendrick. “What do you have to say?”
“First off, we're not your subordinates, so you can quit the act. Secondly, we're all stuck here--you, just as much as us--so we need to be working together, not establishing a caste system.”
“Noted. Now, can you help gather everyone up?” Blake snapped.
“Since I could hear the question mark that time, sure, I can help.” Kendrick said. Blake rolled his eyes again and walked off, trying to get everyone’s attention.
Ten minutes later, Kendrick and Lafayette returned with a large crowd of refugees. “Well, Blue, here's your crowd,” Kendrick declared while crossing his arms.
“All right!” Blake shouted. “The Cabal are coming for us without a doubt. The ship is still functional, but we need a pilot. Can anyone fly?”
“I can,” a male Awoken declared as he forced himself through the crowd. He was young, any experience he had with flying was fresh. “My name is Kaber Reeves, I used to bus people to and from the Tower."
“Great. Get yourself acquainted with the ship and we'll start packing up. We need to be off the ground ASAP,” Blake replied. “As for everyone else: any marksmen can serve as lookout, let me know if any Cabal start showing up; medics, get any remaining wounded stable and prepared to move--I’ll help; everyone else start stocking the ship with whatever supplies we have left. Let's get moving!” Blake yelled with the clap of his hands. People began to disperse after the brief announcement.
“Who’da known we pulled the next Titan Vanguard from a plane?” Kendrick said to his friend.
“What was that?” Blake asked as he marched over to the Guardians.
“I thought I whispered that,” Kendrick stated as he twisted to face the titan.
“You didn't,” Lafayette confirmed with the shake of his head.
“Well…” Kendrick grumbled. “Since you heard that, then I'll admit I said it. You're still acting like you're in charge.”
“This again?!” Blake exclaimed as he flailed his arms.
“Yes, this again. You're not letting anyone have a chance. There's probably a better strategist here, but you're deciding everything for us.”
“Better strategist? Like you?”
“God no. I'm too much of a loose cannon. But who knows? Jake from--whatever the h*** he does--might know a way to defend this location, but he's off lifting boxes because you took it upon yourself to give the orders.”
“Look,” Blake said as he placed a stern finger on Kendrick's shoulder. The titan looked down at it, then back to Blake; the warlock sidestepped twice. “I’m trying to keep everyone safe, and everyone is doing just fine. You, and only you, have an issue with this. This is no time for some renegade to start stirring trouble.”
Kendrick gripped Blake's hand and twisted it; an audible creaking followed, but it was unclear if that was bone or armor. “Renegade, huh? I like the sound of that.” Immediately, Kendrick was caught in a headlock and flipped in the air, landing on his back.
“Oh wow, okay. I'll say,” Kendrick groaned as he rolled over and pushed himself up. “I didn't expect you to still have some fight left in you after you turned yourself into a plane’s crash dummy…” Kendrick threw a hard cross, but Blake dodged it, and wrapped his arms around Kendrick's shoulder and threw him down again. The gilded titan sat up on one knee and cracked his neck. “All right, now I'm pissed.”
Kendrick jumped up with lightning speed and threw several left jabs to disorient Blake. The defender finally got the senses needed to catch Kendrick's hand, surprising the sunbreaker. Kendrick quickly threw a hard right cross knocking Blake to the ground. Kendrick took a step back and flexed his fingers a few times as he watched the defender resting on his arms and knees.
The titan in blue eventually stood up and wiped blood from his nose and upper lip. Despite the fact that he no longer had his Glasshouse helmet, Blake charged Kendrick and forced him into the hull of the hawk. Kendrick tried to push Blake's arms apart to loosen his grip, but Blake gripped the horn and Kendrick's helmet and forced his head upward. Kendrick growled as his neck muscles tensed up. He grabbed Blake's wrist and crushed it until the titan lost his grip. Kendrick placed one boot against the ship and used it to push Blake back, but Blake’s feet were dug in. Finally, Kendrick quit resisting and threw his knee up, causing it to collide into the defender’s stomach.
Blake gasped as his breath vanished, but he remained standing. Kendrick took this opportunity to leap around the titan and got him in a headlock. Blake tried to elbow him but he caught the free arm and held him in place. “Yield, d***it!” Kendrick shouted as he planted his feet and restrained Blake. The defender’s vision started to fade, but in a last ditch effort, Blake picked up his feet and used his weight to flip himself and Kendrick forward; Blake landed on the sunbreaker and knocked his breath out.
Blake rolled over and formed a fist aimed for Kendrick's visor. “HEEEYYY!” someone shouted fiercely. Blake froze and looked up to see Iota standing beside Kaber. The nanites that formed her facial expressions were jittery and out of focus again, but they slowly calmed down just as Iota did. Blake glanced around and realized a crowd had encircled them. “Kaber has something to tell you!” After her second outburst, purely for the sake of the Awoken, Iota began to retract into her bubble of personal space while Icarus scanned her.
Blake stood up, giving Kendrick the space to get up as well. The titan in gold brushed the dirt off of his shiny armor then stared Blake down as he walked away. “Yeah, uh…” Kaber began. “The ship's radar detected three harvesters coming this way…”
