A journey that should have been minutes seemed to get stretched out into hours; however, it was still several hours from daybreak. Logan and Aurora had to work together to pull Angel along the difficult terrain, and the three ghosts were losing their Light, which they used to help carry the cot.
“So, uh… How did you two… meet?” Aurora asked as she strained to hoist the titaness and the cot up a rocky slope.
“Is this really a good time?” Angel rebuked.
“Got any better ideas?” Aurora followed up.
Logan looked down at Angel, who huffed and rolled her eyes. He looked back up and said, “It was back before we died… We used to live in what is now referred to as… ‘Old Chicago’… We had several interests… and it went from there.”
“So you remember your past? Interesting,” Aurora said.
“Kind of. I didn't at first, but a return trip home brought back a lot of… bad memories.” The Guardians found level ground where they unanimously decided to rest. Logan removed his coat again, letting Angel use it as a makeshift pillow.
“What was it like--waking up again?”
“Uneventful, if I'm being honest. Merlin found me in the crater, and from there we ‘set off for adventure’. It was after I got to the City that I began experimenting with my Light,” Logan replied.
“What about you?” Aurora asked Angel.
Angel rolled over so she could see everyone right-side up. “Uh, quite the opposite: Alice revived me in the crater where I fainted… Twice?”
“Just the once, dear,” Alice piped up. “You threatened to puke the second time.”
“Right. Well, we took shelter in a sunken skyscraper for the night. The next morning, we were surrounded by Hive.”
“What did you do?” Aurora asked. “Did Silajir use his magic to get you out?”
“Not at first; I still had to fight off a knight,” Angel rolled up her sleeve, revealing a terrible scar from where the beast clawed her arm.
“Ow,” Aurora said sympathetically.
“I did save you from the fall, though,” Logan added.
“You dropped me on a road, just so you could make a surprise entrance,” Angel said, a smile growing.
“I did do that…” Logan said softly, slightly ashamed. Aurora laughed along with the couple. “What about you? What do you remember of your past?”
The huntress leaned forward, her helmet shining brilliantly in the firelight. “Not much, anything really. But it seemed I wasn't dead long--I woke up with a man in tears and a ring on my finger…” Aurora turned her gaze to the flame, and she slowly caressed her finger where a ring once was. “But that was a long time ago. Once I got out of the Asteroid Belt, I basically became Shaxx’s student until I ruled his little game.”
Logan, noticing she grew increasingly uncomfortable, asked, “So you never served the Vanguard?”
Aurora chuckled. “Oh no. I prefer challenges, not cannon fodder… So, you both woke up in the crater? Did you go out… with a bang?” She shook her shoulders, emphasizing her question.
Angel's eyes bulged, and Logan shot the huntress a look. “Stargazing. There was a comet that rarely came around, and we wanted to see it. Unbeknownst to us, we were in the bullseye of a meteor that slipped past scanners.”
Aurora threw her arms up defensively. “Just curious. It's rare for two Guardians to be revived in the same location.”
“I believe that's enough questions. If you ladies want to get some rest, I'll take watch,” Logan said as he stood up.
“Want your coat back?” Angel asked as she unbundled her pillow.
“Oh no, you can hang onto it. The ground’s pretty solid here, so you'll need it for your head.”
Aurora drew her Hawkmoon and flipped it in the air so she was holding it by the barrel. “You might need it more than I,” she said. Logan took the gun then took post near a tree.
Hours had passed, and the distance east sky seemed to look blue again; but it was still two hours until sunrise. Logan, still wide awake, kept scanning the landscape. He crossed his arms to keep himself warm, but also to keep his weapon hidden. Merlin also kept watch, but he had quickly fallen asleep on his Guardian’s shoulder; his triangular hat regularly inflated and deflated like a lung as he snored.
“Okay soldier, you can stand down now,” Aurora said as she approached.
Logan turned to her and asked, “What are you doing up?”
“I'm taking over for next shift,” she replied as she took back the cannon when Logan handed it to her. She twirled the gun on her finger then holstered the weapon. She inspected Logan's arm after removing the bandage, “The bleeding seems to have stopped.”
Logan raised his arm and nodded. “Thanks,” he said.
“Why do you do this?” Aurora asked, tilting her head slightly.
“Do what?” Logan asked in return.
Aurora took off her helmet, revealing her fair, blue skin and silver hair that swayed in the wind. She held it precariously as she looked into the warlock's eyes. “Why do you hide behind your ‘mask’? Why do you let yourself suffer just to be this stoic hero?” She rubbed her hand over Logan's wound, reminding him of what she did earlier. “Do you just not like people helping you?”
Logan moved her hand away saying, “It's not so simple.” Angel blinked a few times after waking. She saw the two conversing under the tree, holding each other's hands, and her eyes squinted sharply.
