Daybreak Wars Ch. 6 pt. 2: A Day Without Light

Matson woke up, feeling a dull pain engulfing him. He shifted around, then realized he was laying in a fire. He scurried away, unclipping the remains of his cloak in the process; he then rolled around to put out any flames that clung onto him. Once the fire was out, he looked to the sky and watched as the command ship flew away, still laying waste to the City. “Laurel!” he screamed needlessly.     “She's not up there anymore,” Panoptes declared. “She jumped…”     “She jumped?” Matson asked, now petrified. “Find her,” he ordered. Matson tried to walk towards the beacon on his HUD, then he collapsed and pain shot threw his body.     “Some ribs are broken,” Panoptes said matter-of-factly. “Gimme a sec, maybe I can heal it…”     “No! If I haven't self-healed, then neither has Laurel… Find her,” the hunter declared while pushing his ghost away.     The gold ghost stared at his injured but stubborn Guardian, then he said, “She's in that house over there.” Matson stood back up, using his No Land Beyond as a crutch, and walked to the nearby structure.     He pushed open the door and there was Laurel, laying in a shallow crater with her crimson ghost clutched against her chest; a hole was punched in the roof above her. “Laurel,” he cried out, but the warlock did not reply. Matson turned to his ghost, “Is she dead?…”     “I.D.K,” Panoptes replied.     “Heal her,” Matson ordered as he walked up next to the Awoken.     Panoptes sputtered, “But Matson, I only have enough Light to--"     “I don't care. Heal--her--now,” Matson ordered, growing more furious with each protest.     Panoptes sighed. “I can't… But I can give you the Light, and you can do whatever you want with it.”     “Do it,” Matson absorbed the Light, then channeled it through his hands and into Laurel's exposed and bleeding arm. Her pale blue skin was healed of any wounds, and her now open violet eyes had a golden hue to them.     “Mat?” she asked as she turned her head slightly. The hunter fell back, feeling weaker than ever.     “I'm fine,” he stated, although it was a lie.     “Raisin?” Crimson asked as she floated up and scanned her Guardian. She then turned to Matson and asked, “You gave her arc Light?”     “It's all I have. Is it a problem?” Matson asked.     Crimson sighed. “I don't know; she doesn't seem to be rejecting it… yet.”     “Guys,” Panoptes said. “The Cabal are coming to kick us while we're down; we have to go.”     “I'm plotting a course for us now. It seems a stray missile punched a hole in the wall not too far from us,” Crimson stated.     Laurel climbed out of the hole in the floor and picked up her hand cannon. Matson forced himself back onto his feet, still clenching the contorted barrel of his sniper rifle. Crimson materialized her Guardian’s helmet around her, then they made their way outside. Cabal legionnaires and interceptors patrolled every street in the City, making escape nigh impossible.     While Laurel and Matson followed the beacons that Crimson provided, Matson collapsed again; he curled up in pain and held his stomach. “What's wrong?” Laurel asked as she knelt down by him.     “He has some broken ribs, but he wouldn't let me heal them…”     Laurel looked around, “Help!” she screamed. “Help, please! He's hurt! He needs help!” she continued to scream, hoping to get someone's attention.     “Hey, over here!” a faint voice shouted. Soon, two men and just as many women, as well as a few children, appeared through the veil of smoke. They saw the prone hunter and were quick to hoist him on their shoulders.     “Thank you,” Laurel cried as she followed with the couple of families.     “It's no problem, ma’am. Do you know a way out of here?” one of the men said.     “Yes, there's a hole in the wall about a half a mile ahead of us,” Laurel replied. Suddenly, a squad of Cabal led by a colossus blocked their path. The children began crying, and their mothers tried to hide their eyes. “Crimson, channel my Light,” Laurel demanded. She materialized a solar grenade and held it in the palm of her hand; from it, a bolt of Light pierced through the hearts of the six alien soldiers. They all collapsed one by one, and so did Laurel with her Light nearly depleted.     The women helped Laurel to her feet, then they continued their way to the breach in the wall.
