As a player who has hung up his boots, never purchsed Warmind, and is patiently awaiting September as the last chance for Bungie to entice me to return I can't help but wonder what keeps the community going. I could rant as to why I quit, but I won't. I'm just curious. I have over 1200 hours of D1 and close to 400 in D2 logged. I don't feel burnt out, I want to like Destiny 2. I just honestly believe there is no reason to play.
What makes you stay and continue to play Destiny 2? No reason is invalid. I'm just genuinely curious as to why people still play.

I genuinely enjoy this game, and while it can be improved it's one of my favorite games of all time.

Already bought with the season pass. Gave it a try, only thing i havent tried is the raid and im not going to spend every waking hour grinding light levels on old content to meet these wlitist expectations. Got 5 victory royales last night, way more rewarding than light levels.

Nothing. Will not be pre-ordering in September. Game has lost its lore and meaningful grind. To bad. D1 was great though. ✌

I can't be sure. The last few days have been dull. Heroic modifiers have caused me to log off in anger more than once the last week. And ppl leaving strikes or underpowered players constantly dying in strikes. I've genuinely stopped having fun in this game. I can't even pick a story mission when I want. Escalation is a non event for the most part cos of the requirements for power & fireteam. Bugs all over the place. And Warmind brought us more remixed story missions for strikes. That drop nothing meaningful. Thing is, I log into D1 every Friday night for beers & treasure. And it's a helluva lot more fun.

Daily bounties, weekly milestones. I love using new weapons. I also really like the artwork in this game. It's something to do at night for a couple of hours. I've also made some friends, so that's cool too.

NOTHING!!!

Came back to play warmind as it was pre-ordered. Now going to wait until Sept as they’ve broken too many things and don’t really want to go through the whole trial and error nonsense. PVP is horrible, PVE just has no reason to play - nothing really makes you more powerful and gear is too lack lustre

I like the actual game play. And since they updated the weapons, I was interested in trying out different ones. (By the time they got around to updating, I was pretty much using three weapons on all my characters, and that had me not playing much.) That said, I don't rush to play the last day or two before the weekly reset right now, because I also want to progress and we really don't outside of the Milestones every week.

A question like this will have different responses. Some people play it because they get an actual enjoyment out of it, others play it because they feel obligated for buying it. Believe me when I say, when September comes, the playerbase is going to drop drastically! We know they're going to attempt to overhype the expansion like they did with the D2 reveal but some to most of us are smart enough not to fall for that. Whoever remains will most likely be diehard Bungie/Destiny fans or those that still wants to give them a chance.
