Chapter Eighteen: Sand Land
Part Five
Enraged now, the Colossus hefted its machine gun up in the air with one hand and roared defiantly. To my dismay, several small missiles were pumped out of the armor on its back as it did so, all of them flying towards my position steadily. The lone Cabal started firing on Sierra again with its gun, but before the missiles reached me over the long distance l had time to put one quick bullet into its thick leg, making it stumble and hold fire.
l ducked back just in time to avoid a missile that had been going right at my face and shielded myself with my arms as it collided with the opposite wall and sprayed shrapnel and dust on me. The other missiles came immediately after, shaking the wall that my back was against and probably scorching up the other side badly.
“William do something!” Sierra commanded, clearly frustrated.
“Trying!” l flipped back out and fired a quick shot, but it just buried itself into the immense shoulder plating and l had to hide from another batch of missiles, “Its armor is too thick and l can’t hit the head!”
“Well neither can l! And l don’t have any ammo for my rocket launcher!” Sierra pointed out, “And Drew…wait a minute, where the hell is Drew?”
“Right here you pansies!” Drew’s voice answered in the channel, followed by an alarmed bellow from the Colossus.
Sticking my head out of cover, l was relieved to find that the Colossus was no longer able to fire at us, but shocked to find that Drew had somehow managed to sneak up behind the Cabal and grab it from behind. The giant struggled to escape Drew’s grasp and throw him off, swinging its arms back futilely at a target too small to reach, but Drew kept his feet planted and with a grunt started to hoist the creature up off the ground. My jaw dropped as the hefty alien’s feet lifted off of the ground, causing it even more alarm. That was definitely heavier than a Pike. Letting out a mighty shout from the effort, Drew got his hands under the Cabal’s back and hefted it above his head before throwing it down to the ground below.
A plume of dust rose with the heavy impact and the Colossus’ weapon tumbled away from its hands. After several seconds it started trying to push itself up, but clearly had trouble handling its own weight. Meanwhile, Drew was preparing to leap down after it.
“For the pineapples!” the Titan bellowed as he dropped down, his feet landing squarely on his target’s head to keep it down on the ground.
“Pineapples?” l questioned.
“Is that a fruit?” John was equally confused.
“l don’t know, he mentioned them last time we were here, too,” Sally told us.
Stepping off of the concussed Colossus, Drew raised an arm that flowed and crackled with electricity and swung it back and down in an arc that hit the Cabal right in its dangling face. The body spasmed a bit at the impact and then went limp, the scorched and busted helmet a clear sign that it couldn’t have survived.
“Ugly pudding face,” Drew said with satisfaction as he admired his work, then turned to face Sierra and l. “l’M A MASTER OF STEALTH!” his voice boomed across the stone enclosure and out over the sands.
“Ugh,” Sierra grunted at Drew as she finally managed to get away from the rock she had hidden behind.
“Look out Sand Land! Drew is BACK!” he continued his boasting.
“Please tell me you’re done, Rush,” l slid down to the floor and sat with my back against the wall, relieved.
“Just finished, actually,” Rush hovered up to me, “They had everything we needed. It’s the Garden alright.”
“Does every Ghost have the same horrible timing as you?!” Sierra raged.
“Hey l was helping!” Rush protested.
“We were getting shot at and blown up and you couldn’t finish looking at a computer before the fight was over!” Sierra snapped.
“We did all the work man,” Drew pointed out to Rush.
“Oh really? l thought you were too busy busting your head on rocks to help,” Rush retorted.
“At least he thinks faster than you hack computers!” John joined in.
l sat helplessly as they jabbed at each other, but luckily someone else had the nerves to stop them. “Stop arguing!” Sally’s voice rose above the others, instantly resulting in dead silence. “Good,” Sally huffed, “Now all of you apologize; everyone helped out.”
Sierra, John, Rush, and Drew all mumbled apologies. l had to hold in a laugh at their sudden meekness. “Drew’s right, you are fun like this Sally,” l told her.
“Lot’s of memories here,” Sally reminisced.
“So what now?” Drew asked.
l turned my head to the Vex gate, still looming above the dunes even at this distance.
“Now,” l answered, “We wait for our way in, and make the Vex hurt.”
