“Hey, are you all right?” I asked as I caught up with Blake.
“Yeah, I just didn't want to hear that,” the titan replied.
Lightning flashed outside, illuminating the night sky each time; thunder always followed the intense power as well. The storm that had been moving our way finally arrived, and the City would soon soak. Blake and I entered the Vanguard Hall, where everyone was on edge; something was wrong, but neither of us were aware of what it could be.
“There are no satellites!” Ikora declared as she looked up from her holotablet.
“And that's not good…” Cayde said next.
Blake and I, now on high alert as well, watched as Commander Zavala and his ghost walked to the massive window in the back of the chamber. Another flash of lightning highlighted the clouds, and subsequently, created dozens of silhouettes in the sky. “Battle stations!” Hundreds of missiles soared straight towards us, straight for the Tower.
“Everyone with me! Now!” Zavala shouted as he cast a Ward of Dawn around him. Blake and I, along with everyone else, rushed for the void bubble just in time for the explosions. The ceiling began to collapse, crushing frames and people alike. Ikora and Cayde appeared in the bubble with us, and we patiently watched as fire and smoke obscured our vision. The constant shockwaves rattled the few of us around, but Zavala stoodfast and maintained the void dome.
After a couple of minutes, the ringing in my ears finally subsided. I shoved the rubble off of me, then got up. The center of the Vanguard Hall was missing, and what remained was engulfed in flames. Blake and Zavala helped corral the crew into the Hall of Guardians and away from the danger. I tried to follow, but I was stumbling with each step, I tripped a few times as well. Blake got his arm under mine and together we rushed down the hall. I turned around one last time to see a red harvester before the Vanguard leaders shut the gate; staying behind to fight off the attackers.
Deeper in the Tower, civilians were gathered and were watched by Lord Shaxx. Many were scared and crying, in shock even; rightfully so. Upon entering, Blake and Doc teamed up to heal and care for any and everyone. I, on the other hand, propped against the wall and felt my head--I was bleeding. Even though I saw the red on my fingers and knew what it was, I could not process what was wrong.
“What the h*** is going on?” Kendrick asked as he and Lafayette crawled out of the shooting range.
“I don't know,” I replied unnaturally calm.
“The Cabal are attacking!” Colt said next.
Finally my senses came back to me, and a flood of thoughts swept across my brain; one thought lingered most of all. “My family's down in the City!” I screamed.
Blake twisted around and looked to me. “All right. I'll stay and help here; you get down to the City.”
I prepared to leave, but another thought surfaced. “What about Kourtney?”
“She and Dakota went back to the Iron Temple before the attack,” Blake replied as he wrapped a bandage around a woman’s arm.
After processing the information, I willed on my red and black armor and unholstered my Ace of Spades, then ran for the Tower plaza. As I climbed the stairs, the angry glow of fire lit up the sky. Hawk gunships and Cabal harvesters soared around the Tower, gunning each other down; if a ship wasn't flying, it was crashing into buildings. But something else caught my gaze: an enormous, six-armed ship slowly drifted toward the Traveler. “Colt, bring my ship around!”
“On it's way,” he replied.
Soon, my iconic jumpship came to a stop at the edge of the Tower Plaza. I summoned as much of my courage as I could muster and ran as fast as I could. Then, a large, red command-ship emerged from its hiding spot as it came around the Tower hanger. It launched a salvo of missiles, which destroyed my ship instantaneously.
“S***!” I yelled as I fell backwards, trying to spin around. After getting up, I ran for cover behind the kiosk.
Just then, Commander Zavala and Blake reached the courtyard as well. “What the f*** is that?!” Blake shouted; I assume he was referring to the device approaching the Traveler.
Several large pods were launched from the command-ship. I gathered Light around my hand cannon and ignited it into the Golden Gun; I shot three of the pods, causing them to explode, but I couldn't hit any others. I covered my head as four crashed into the plaza, expecting to be thrown backwards from the explosions. Instead, a dozen of Cabal emerged from the objects and started shooting at us.
Blake threw up a Ward of Dawn, and I did not hesitate to hide inside of it. After regaining my senses, Blake and I stepped back out and shot at the invaders. One Cabal soldier projected a large blade from its arm, then rushed up towards us. It ran into the bubble, but Blake was quick to snap its arm and pull its head down into his knee. “Get to the City, we got this!” He shouted to me.
I ran out of the Ward, but Zavala yanked me back in. I scorned him, but I soon realized that he saved me from another volley of missiles flying straight at us. Had I been out there, Colt and I would have been obliterated. Once the bombardment ended, I bolted out of the Ward of Dawn and for the edge of the Tower. Without a second thought, I jumped over the railing and dove to the City below.
Standing back to back, Zavala and Blake gunned down the advancing Cabal troops. Another salvo of missiles was launched at the Tower, this time heading for the supports of the plaza. The place lurched drastically and everyone was shaken by it. “Thrower!” Zavala shouted. “Go help with the evac!”
“Copy that,” Blake declared. He spun around and hustled to the Hall of Guardians just as another volley of explosives collapsed the stairwell. With the lights out, Doc appeared and illuminated the walkway.
“Once this is all over, there'll be a substantial amount of subjects for my genetics experiments,” the ghost whispered.
“This really isn't the time, Doc!” Blake exclaimed.
“Excuse me, but if we unlock the secrets of their DNA, we could use their biological faults to our advantage,” the ghost replied.
Blake and Lord Shaxx helped guide people to the rear plaza of the Tower, where airbuses were docked and waiting to carry people to safe zones. Just as the last group of civilians were being escorted, two harvesters flew around and bombarded the deck. Blake was quick to respond by creating a Ward of Dawn around the carrier, but he had nothing to shoot down the enemy. Everyone began to scream and cry as the impacts against the void barrier shook them all.
Suddenly, a fiery hammer punched through one of the Cabal starships and sent it spiraling to the ground. Blake looked down to see Kendrick glowing orange with fire. Beside him, Lafayette cast a Nova Bomb, which sucked the other ship into oblivion. Once the harvesters were destroyed, the two Guardians reloaded their weapons and prepared to board.
A squad of Cabal, led by a centurion carrying a massive void cannon, burst through two large gates. Blake somersaulted between Kendrick and Lafayette and used his Dark-drinker to produce a ward to deflect the void bolt, but the blade of the sword just shattered instead; even a piece of Blake's armor fractured and fell off. The Defender threw down the jagged hilt, then switched to the elegant shotgun, Chaperone. Each slug was carefully aimed at the skulls of Cabal, dropping three of the beasts. “The ship’s ready to go!” the pilot shouted from the airbus. Blake, Kendrick, and Lafayette boarded the ship and left the Tower to its ruin.
