XCOM

Anybody have any good XCOM stories to share? Could be good, bad, embarrassing, whatever. A couple of mine in the spoiler:
XCOM 1: I get to the very last mission in the game, and stack all my soldiers up before the throne room. My Brazilian assault man ate a couple plasma rounds a few rounds back, but otherwise the team was good health. I opened the door and sent all my team in in a tight formation. I put them all in good cover, deal what damage I can, and end the turn. The High Ethereal turns around and puts a psionic rift in the center of my formation, killing two thirds of them instantly. I reloaded my save. XCOM 2: I run a rescue op to save a scientist with information on the location of the ADVENT regional HQ in Australia. In the fight through the prison, several brave Aussie rookies lose their lives. I free the scientist and gave him run to the extraction. I forget to kill one advent trooper, who takes an overwatch shot that kills the scientist in one hit. The mission fails and the three survivors evac in shame. XCOM 2: A simple rookie training mission goes disastrously wrong when they get cornered by the berserker queen, a pack of chrysalids, and a faceless. There were no survivors.
• XCOM 2: defend the ship when it’s shot down. My squad of best and brightest obviously taking point on the defense as the mission starts. It’s going well enough as they manage to chew through most of the resistance encountered. My crew is all sent to help one man at a time until the scrubs I haven’t even started leveling are sent out as well. Two rounds from the end, I have three enemies left and my A Team manages to screw up and miss every engagement. I had placed my new scrub on overwatch the previous round and he reacts to blast one of them to dust. Next round he destroys a second. A-Team shocked from the sight of this manage to goof it up and miss again. Last enemy fires and thankfully misses as well. New Guy Sam the Super-Scrub stands from cover and blasts the last enemy with something like a 15% chance to hit. Needless to say, he was promoted and brought forward into my vanguard element. XCOM: this is more of my response. When the base is attacked and they sent me help every round. I just thought to myself, XCOM doesn’t just give you anything. What are they throwing at me to justify handing me more soldiers? I won, but it was hair raising.

From my first ever xcom 2 play through: I was bad at xcom at this time, I didn't have a stable income of supplies and resources, and I didn't have any weapon or armour upgrades except the tier 2 sword. The ship gets shot down by ADVENT, cue the 'save the ship' mission, I send my most capable soldiers to fight. We destroy the jammer but at a huge cost, many soldiers perished, eventually all my frontline soldiers fall as we try to extract. One sniper witnessed it all, Zoe Robinson, she was the only one to make it out alive that day, she was sniping from the fortifications at the ramp. She is now a permanent character in my character pool, scarred and hiding in the shadows swearing revenge for those who died.

    • It’s been so long since I’ve played one. But apart from the typical 95% hit chance misses definitely any time a Queen/King enemy decided to visit in Xcom 2. My A team got annihilated by the Berserker Queen the first time I met her. Fun times.

    • Yeah first one was my legendary sniper later in the game that just got back after like a decade of injuries. Used her for the first time on overwatch on the VIP thin men mission and let’s just say all of the overwatch triggers were activated and all the thin men were killed. Second one was the first time I saw the Viper queen or whatever. And well yeah that ended horribly for everyone involved
